Rat droppings, sewage leaks & more in Upstate restaurants with the worst September inspections

South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Upstate in September, from rat droppings to a sewage leak with an inoperable bathroom. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Upstate counties.

Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in September.

Happy Donkey Mexican Grill at 3230 S. Main St. in Anderson

Happy Donkey Mexican Grill had an inspection on Sept. 6 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed multiple utensils and dishes stored as clean that were not clean to sight and touch and had evidence of food debris. Also observed was pink and black grime on the deflector plate of the ice machine.

Multiple employees were seen not washing hands before putting on gloves. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 20 and got another C grade. The restaurant had another followup inspection on Oct. 2 and again got a C grade.

Papa’s & Beer Mexican Restaurant at 317 Haywood Road in Greenville

Papa’s & Beer Mexican Restaurant had an inspection on Sept. 25 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed the accumulation of a black substance in the ice bin of the ice machine. Also observed was an accumulation of food debris in the kitchen prep area.

Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Open containers of ready to eat foods were seen stored in the cooler below rusted and deteriorated shelving.

A required followup inspection has not yet been held.

Roscoe’s Running Crab at 3400 White Horse Road in Greenville

Roscoe’s Running Crab had an inspection on Sept. 20 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed evidence of rodent droppings and the presence of flies in the kitchen. Also observed was pork thawing in standing water without being washed, rinsed and sanitized.

A wiping cloth was seen stored on the side of a trash can. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 28 and got an A grade.

Rancho Grande at 95 Greenwood Ave. South in Greenwood

Rancho Grande had an inspection on Sept. 5 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed rodent droppings on shelves in the back room of the dining room. Also observed was an accumulation of brown residue on the dish machine.

An accumulation of grease buildup was seen on the walls of the cook line. Dishes were seen on a shelf not clean to sight and touch. Hamburger meat was seen sitting on top of a box of chicken.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Sept. 26 and got an A grade.

China 1 at 5350 N. Main St. in Spartanburg

China 1 had an inspection on Sept. 29 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed cooked wonton noodles stored in a raw chicken box. Also observed cooked wontons stored in direct contact with a non-food contact rated cardboard box.

Cooked chicken was seen cooling at room temperatures for multiple hours. Cases of to-go containers were seen stored within living quarters. Debris accumulation was seen throughout the facility. A sewage leak was seen next to the right, rear exterior wall of the building, making the restroom inoperable.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 5 and got an A grade.
