Ratched star Sarah Paulson has shared a disappointing update regarding the second season of the show, confirming that it has been cancelled.

The Netflix series saw Paulson play Nurse Mildred Ratched, detailing her origin story prior to the events of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

Despite initially receiving a two-season order, the series had been in limbo following the conclusion of the first season in 2020, and the lead star has now confirmed its fate.

In a post on X/Twitter from an American Horror Story fan account, a video was shared which showed Paulson being asked if Ratched would return for a second season, to which the star said: “No.”

Ratched, which was produced by Ryan Murphy, took place in 1947 as the nurse arrived at a leading psychiatric hospital to embark on a “clandestine” mission, with her “stylish exterior belying a growing darkness” that had been “smouldering within”.

Paulson recently made a guest appearance in Prime Video series Mr & Mrs Smith, which sees Donald Glover and Maya Erskine star as a married couple who happen to be highly skilled assassins.

“Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan,” reads the logline for the series.

“The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone.
