Ravenna man pleads guilty to kidnapping in rape case

A Ravenna man has pleaded guilty in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a woman in Ravenna.

Abdul Khabeer Abdus-Shakoor, 54, pleaded guilty Monday in Portage County Common Pleas Court to a single count of felony kidnapping. Sentencing is pending completion of a pre-sentencing investigation by the court.

Cases against two Ravenna women implicated in the case − Deolia A. Day, 58, and Karen S. Gibbons, 62 − are still pending. According to court records, Day is also known as Deolia A. Perry, while Abdus-Shakoor is formerly known as Calvin Lamont Coleman.

According to a Ravenna police report, the 53-year-old victim reported Oct. 24 that she had been with the three defendants at Day and Abdus-Shakoor's Cedar Avenue apartment on Oct. 23.

Day reportedly claimed the woman stole $200 from her purse, and Day and Abdus-Shakoor searched the woman's car, causing extensive damage.

The money was not found, and Day and Gibbons reportedly took the woman into the apartment's bathroom, while Abdus-Shakoor stood outside, and had her remove all of her clothing. Then, while Gibbons allegedly held the woman's arms down and covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, Day searched the woman, using a bread bag provided by Abdus-Shakoor on her hand.

The alleged search resulted in a rape charge.

The money still was not found, and the woman was released from the bathroom, she said, but was only allowed to leave the apartment after a number of hours, when her phone and keys were returned to her.

A grand jury indicted Abdus-Shakoor, Day and Gibbons on charges of rape and kidnapping, both first-degree felonies, felony robbery and felony sexual battery.

In a plea deal, all but the kidnapping charge were dismissed against Abdus-Shakoor. He faces a maximum sentence of 11 to 16 1/2 years in prison, according to court records.

Day and Gibbons are also both charged with felony weapons under disability, with a firearms specification, in connection with a handgun they are not allowed to possess due to prior felony drug possession convictions.

The police report does not include any mention of a gun.

Day and Gibbons are scheduled for arraignment Feb. 14 after an amended indictment.

The indictment now stipulates the alleged robbery was committed "recklessly” and the alleged kidnapping was committed "by force, threat or deception knowingly, under circumstances that create a substantial risk of serious physical harm to (the woman) or cause physical harm to (the woman), by either removing another from the place where (the woman) is found or restraining liberty…"

The rape, kidnapping, robbery and sexual battery charges against Gibbons and Abdus-Shakoor also have been amended to complicity, accusing them of aiding and abetting Day in those offenses.

Abdus-Shakoor was arraigned on the amended indictment Monday, but due to his plea under the original indictment, prosecutors dropped prosecution of the amended one.
