Ravenna all-time leading scorer Lauren Calhoun to be honored August 19

The Ravens will kick off their home football schedule by honoring the top scorer in Ravenna basketball history: Lauren Calhoun.

Calhoun, who now plays college basketball for Wheeling University, is scheduled to be on hand with her parents for a special ceremony at Portage Community Bank Stadium August 19.

The celebration won't just coincide with the Ravens' season opener against Lorain.

It also will coincide with the 50th anniversary of Title IX, which helped spur the growth of women's sports and opportunities for talented student-athletes like Calhoun.

"It's the 50th anniversary of Title IX," Ravenna athletic director Jim Lunardi said. "Being a top scorer among both the boys and girls, I thought that'd be a really neat way to honor her."

Per Lunardi, who, along with Superintendent Laura Hebert, has helped put the event together, the celebration will include a video presentation (the Ravens are one of a few local schools with a video scoreboard) as well as permanent banners in James L. Coll Gymnasium.

"A lot of people are like, 'Why are you doing it during the football season when technically she's a basketball player?'" Lunardi said. "There's a couple different reasons. Number one, the fact that she's leaving for school the following week to be moved in, and by the time basketball season rolls around for us, she's [well] into her basketball season. It's tougher for her to get back."

Calhoun, who averaged a double-double last season for the Cardinals (19.4 points, 11.4 rebounds), earned first team all-conference honors three straight years when she played for the Ravens.

Her impact continues in Ravenna, per Lunardi.

"She is a wonderful young lady," Lunardi said. "She comes every summer to our gym and works out. She's taken a couple of our bigger centers and worked with them."

That's part of what will make August 19 so special.
