Ravens elevate center Colon-Castillo, safety Gilchrist to active roster for divisional game vs. Bengals

The Ravens are promoting center Trystan Colon-Castillo and safety Marus Gilchrist to the active roster for Sunday’s divisional game against the Cincinnati Bengals in Baltimore, according to the NFL transaction wire.

It’s the first time this season either player has been promoted to the game-day roster under new NFL rules that allow each team to promote up to two practice squad players per week.

Colon-Castillo, an undrafted rookie from Missouri, was viewed as a strong candidate to make the 53-man roster but was waived at the roster cutdown deadline and re-signed to the practice squad. With rookie right guard Tyre Phillips unlikely to play Sunday because of a shoulder injury, the Ravens could elect to start Patrick Mekari or Ben Powers and use Colon-Castillo as a reserve interior lineman. D.J. Fluker, who started in Week 4 at right tackle and played a few snaps at left tackle in Week 1, could remain in a swing-tackle role.

The Ravens signed Gilchrist, a 10-year veteran, to the practice squad on Sept. 30. With the Ravens waiving seventh-round pick Geno Stone and re-signing him to the practice squad on Friday, in addition to Jimmy Smith playing a hybrid cornerback-safety role, they have a need for depth at safety.

Gilchrist, 31, has appeared in 126 games and started 98 since being selected in the second round of the 2011 draft by the then-San Diego Chargers.

Colon-Castillo and Gilchrist both will be permitted to return to the practice squad after Sunday’s game without first clearing waivers. Under NFL rules, practice squad players can be promoted twice and return to the practice squad without going through waivers.
