Raw beef splatter, grime inside dishwasher inspectors find these violations in Myrtle Beach area

Each week inspectors from SC Department of Health and Environmental control perform unannounced routine food safety inspections.

The inspectors are checking various things, most importantly food safety at Myrtle Beach area restaurants, grocery stores, retail meat markets, bakeries, delis, school cafeterias seafood markets and convenience stores.

When a restaurant is out of compliance in a routine inspection it is noted on a SC Food Grade report and the establishment has a follow-up inspection within ten days to correct the violations.

This week inspectors found the following violations at these area establishments.

  1. Kings Sushi located at 112 U.S. 17 N., Surfside Beach had a routine inspection on March 27 and received 72 percent “C” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grades report. “Cups were being stored in a hand sink, no paper towels or soap in employee restroom, observed ginger stored in contact with shell eggs that have splash from raw beef, knives, stored as clean were soiled with debris, observed rice cooling in a deep container in the walk-in cooler. The product did not meet proper cooling rate. Observed fried crab cooling at the top of the make top cooler, at the cook line. The product did not meet proper cooling rate. The interior of the dish machine is soiled with grime. The exterior of the fryer is soiled with grease and grime. Food pans re-used for shelving in the walk-in freezer”. Kings Sushi is scheduled to have a follow-up inspection within ten days.

  2. Mi Mexico located at 3600 2&3 U.S. 17 S. North Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on March 28 and received 85 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grades report. “No soap or paper towels at hand sink, improper cooling temperatures: Eggs on shelf in kitchen 80 degrees, display cooler: pork 46 degrees, beef 45 degrees, ham 46 degrees. Dates not observed in meat market on ham and queso fresco. Oven mits have heavy food encrustations , bottom inside cooler in meat market has build-up. Numerous patrons of the facility observed walking through the meat market to use the restroom”. Mi Mexico is scheduled to have a follow-up inspection within ten days.

  3. Pizzeli’s Italian Oven located at 1698 U.S. 17 N., Little River had a routine inspection on March 27 and received 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grade report. “Observed sauces and soups in walk in cooler without date marking, observed tomato sauce cooling in a 5 gallon bucket, product is in too large a portion to allow for proper cooling, water and oil bottles in kitchen without labels, wet rags stored on prep tables and not inside sanitizer buckets, clean utensils stored handles down, Observed hand sink with damaged faucet, soiled floor surfaces in kitchen and dry storage. observed dust accumulation on ceiling, soiled floor surface at cook line”. Pizzeli’s is scheduled to have a follow-up inspection within ten days.

  4. River Oaks Pizzeria located at 157 Sapwood Rd. Unit 107, Myrtle Beach had a routine inspection on March 31 and received 84 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grade report. “The sanitizer concentration level at the mechanical dish machine was measured at 0 ppm of a chlorine-based sanitizer using chlorine-based test strips provided by the facility/inspector - it was corrected at time of inspection. Pizza prep cooler: cooked breaded chicken, prep cooler in front of fryers: cooked and portioned lasagna, cooked chicken wings, breaded eggplant were all observed without being labeled with prepped and (or) discard dates. Spray bottle of de-greaser observed not stored in their original container not labeled with the common name”. River Oaks Pizzeria is scheduled to have a follow-up inspection within ten days.

  5. The Hippie Hen House located at 3256 U.S. 17 Bus., Murrells Inlet had a routine inspection on March 28 and received 82 percent “B” grade. The following violations were found according to the SC Food Grade report. “No hot water available at hand sink, facility does not have adequate refrigeration, scoops without handles in dry stock, no hot water available at 3 compartment sink, no hot water available at dish machine. Facility has closed due to inadequate refrigeration”. The Hippie Hen House had a follow-up inspection on March 29 and received 100 percent “A” grade according to the SC Food Grade report and is open for business.

“INSPECTION KEY”

A | 100 - 88 - The retail food establishment earned more than 87 points. Food safety practices appeared to meet the requirements of Regulation 61-25.

B | 87 - 78 - The retail food establishment earned 78-87 points. Food safety practices need improvement.

C | 77 & Below - The retail establishment earned less than 78 points. Food safety practices need significant improvement.

R | Indicates a Routine Inspection - Unannounced and conducted on a frequency determined by the facility’s Risk Category on a frequency of one to four times a year.

F | Indicates a Follow-Up Inspection - Conducted within ten days of a Routine Inspection that requires follow-up verification.
