Rays report: Francisco Mejia, Jimmy Yacabonis added to roster

DETROIT — The Rays got starting catcher Francisco Mejia back from the injured list and added Jimmy Yacabonis to their bullpen in advance of tonight’s game against the Tigers.

Mejia was out the minimum 10 days with a right shoulder impingement. Yacabonis was claimed off waivers Thursday from the Marlins.

To make room on the 26-man active roster, the Rays optioned catcher Rene Pinto and pitcher Ralph Garza Jr. to Triple-A.

Pinto will remain with the team on the taxi squad. Garza was optioned for the fifth time, which under new rules this season means the next time he is called up he can’t be sent back to Triple-A without first being exposed to waivers.

Veteran Corey Kluber will be on the mound for the Rays, with Bryan Garcia starting for the Tigers.

Also, reliever Luke Bard was claimed off waivers by the Yankees.
