One Juvenile charged for allegedly firing gun in Laney H.S. bathroom

UPDATE | February 6, 2024 – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has charged one juvenile student with Monday’s incident at Laney High School:

  • Possession of a Firearm or Knife During the Commission of a Crime

  • Weapons in School Building

  • Grounds or Functions

  • Criminal Damage to Property in First Degree

  • Interference with Government Property and Theft by Receiving Stolen Property

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls of gunshots at Lucy C Laney High School, Monday.

Investigators say at least one gunshot was fired in a restroom inside the school.

Deputies reviewed video evidence inside the school, leading them to locate and detain the two students they say are responsible for the gunfire.

A Richmond County School System Police Officer was able to locate one student that was believed to be involved, as well as a gun. Another student was located with a knife, according to Laney High Principal Dr. Cordaryl Middleton.

Both students will be formally charged and the incidents will be addressed by the Richmond County Student Code of Conduct and Discipline.

No injuries were reported.

A.R. Johnson and CT Walker students were also impacted by Monday’s gunfire at Lucy Craft Laney. Due to the close proximity of the schools to one another, A.R. Johnson Principal Dr. Emily Driggers and CT Walker Magnet School Principal E.J. Sharif wrote to the parents of their respective students, informing parents that movement at the two magnet schools were also briefly limited as they placed the school on lockdown as a precaution.

Dr. Middleton wrote to the parents and guardians of Lucy Craft Laney High School students, “While this isolated incident has brought negative attention to our school community, it does not erase all the gains we have made this year and the milestones we are on track to achieve. We will continue being the Laney family that comes together to accomplish greatness and excel in academics and athletics.”
