The Cincinnati Reds announced that they acquired shortstop Victor Acosta - the Padres' No. 8 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline - from San Diego in exchange for utility player Brandon Drury ahead of the 6 p.m. Eastern MLB trade deadline.

"Credit to the Reds. This guy signed a minor-league contract," MLB Network analyst Tom Verducci said. "Now they're turning him into a prospect. This is why you sign these guys in Spring Training. And give credit to Brandon Drury. He has the (second) highest slugging percentage on breaking pitches in all of Major League Baseball."

The Enquirer's Charlie Goldsmith had reported Monday that Reds GM Nick Krall said extension talks with Drury were "not on the table at this time."
