Need a new read for the new year? #ReadICT book swap happens this weekend

Need something new to read in the new year? The categories have been announced for the 2024 #ReadICT Challenge, and a book swap on Saturday morning could give you the opportunity to find some books that will fit.

This weekend’s list of activities also includes a show by comedian Kathleen Madigan at The Orpheum and a concert by tribute band “Smells Like Nirvana.” And those planning to get married this year can sample cake and interview photographers at this weekend’s Bridal Expo at Century II.

Read ICT Book Swap

10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Wichita Advanced Learning Library, 711 W. Second St.

The annual #ReadICT Challenge category list is out, and on Saturday, local book enthusiasts can hunt for books that will fit each category at the #ReadICT Book Swap, which will happen from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Wichita Advanced Learning Library. People are invited to search their shelves for extra books and bring them to the library to trade with others. Any leftover books will be donated to the Friends of the Wichita Public Library. Admission to the event is free.

Bridal Expo

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, noon-5 p.m. Sunday, Century II Convention Hall, 225 W. Douglas

If you’re engaged or hope to be, this weekend’s Bridal & Event Expo at Century II will likely provide some valuable information. The event, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday in the Convention Hall, will be filled with more than 200 wedding vendors who specialize in formal wear, catering, music, photography and more. The event also will include wedding wear fashion shows. A one-day ticket is $14, and a weekend pass is $17. Ages 11 and under will be admitted free. Kathleen Madigan Orpheum

8 p.m. Friday, Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadview

The Orpheum’s first big event of the new year is an appearance by Kathleen Madigan, a comedian who is bringing her Potluck Party Tour to the Wichita venue on Friday. Madigan has starred in several comedy specials airing on Amazon, Netflix, Comedy Central and HBO and is the host of the popular weekly podcast “Madigan’s Pubcast.” Tickets to the show, which starts at 8 p.m., are $39.75, $49.75 and $59.75 and are for sale at selectaseat.com, by phone at 316-755-7328 and in person at the Select-a-Seat box office inside Intrust Bank Arena.

Words and music of Little Richard

8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday, Wilke Center, 330 N. Broadway

Singer and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Little Richard is known for hits like “Tutti Frutti,” “Long Tall Sally” and “Lucille,” and a Words & Music show put on by the Forum Theatre will celebrate the songs that made up his career. The show, titled “Here’s Little Richard,” will be performed at the Wilke Center at the First United Methodist Church at 8 p.m. Saturday and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Sunday. Smells Like Nirvana

7:30 p.m. Saturday, The Cotillion, 11120 W. Kellogg

Fans of Nirvana can relive the heyday of the band, which was lead by the late Kurt Cobain, at a concert by Chicago-based tribute band Smells Like Nirvana, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday at The Cotillion. The band performs music from Nirvana’s catalog, including songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The opening acts for the show are Dead Original and For the Birds. Tickets are $20 at thecotillion.com

Art Together: ‘Pages to Palette’

10 a.m. Saturday, Mark Arts, 1307 N. Rock Road

It’s Art Together time again at Mark Arts, and this month’s theme is “Pages to Palette.” The family-friendly event starts at 10 a.m. with a story time that includes readings of the books “Dream Big Little One” and “I am Brave” followed by an art activity at 10:30 a.m. The final activity at 11 a.m. is a live performance by Denise Colburn Dance that explores “what it means to be empowered.” Admission to the event is free, but advance registration is requested at markartsks.com/arttogether/
