Reader argues that atheism isn't at the root of mass shootings in the U.S. Here's why

Chaplain misses the mark with blame for shootings

Chaplain Cliff Rawley made the assertion in a recent Sunday’s News-Leader that “practical atheism” is the root of mass shootings in the United States. He further asserts that “arrrogant atheism” has pushed society “beyond the 10 Commandments” to the detriment of us all. If Chaplain Rawley would do a little research into the facts and not make unsubstantiated claims he would know that the less religious a country is, the less poverty, crime, and unhappiness are among its citizens.

As for “arrogant atheism,” how arrogant is it for followers of Christianity or any religion to dogmatically proclaim that its tenets come directly from their favored god(s)? It seems to be from god(s)' lips to their ears.As for “mass murderers get(ting) away without punishment,” as a chaplain I’m sure Mr. Rawley believes in “deathbed conversion” where anyone can confess their sins, repent, and accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and be admitted to heaven immediately upon dying. That looks like avoiding any punishment to me. If he doesn’t believe that, what role does a chaplain serve if not to give comfort to the dying? How would you comfort someone dying when arrogantly knowing that the person is going to hell?

Atheism is not the cause of our society’s problems.
