Reader’s Choice: Vote for The 2022-23 Observer girls high school sports award winners

For the second straight year, The Charlotte Observer is allowing readers to vote for the girls high school student-athletes and coaches of the year.

Schools in the newspaper’s coverage area were asked to submit nominees. Readers can vote as often as they like until the polls close on Sunday, May 28.

Each category will be divided into two sections: Mecklenburg County and regional. The regional polls will include nominations from schools in Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union Counties.

Mecklenburg County girls athlete of the year

TAYLOR BARLOW, SOUTH MECKLENBURG: Softball star is a nominee for N.C. Gatorade player of the year. Player of the year in the SoMECK conference. Beta Club Officer and National Honor Society member who has completed more than 150 hours of community service. Hitting .590 with nine home runs and 36 RBIs. As a pitcher, 0.57 ERA, 195 strikeouts.

KAYLYN BROWN, MALLARD CREEK TRACK: USA Track and field under 20 champion 100m, 200m, & 400m state qualifier U

RILEY COOK, LAKE NORMAN CHARTER: Girls soccer player had 30 goals and six assists through week of May 9.

GRAYSON ANNE MCCURDY, CHARLOTTE COUNTRY DAY: Sophomore girls Lacrosse, field hockey player + is a starter in both sports. Where she truly excels is on the Lacrosse Field where, to date, she has posted 100 Goals, 52 Assists, 134 Draw Controls and 73 Caused Turnovers in just two seasons.

EVIE MCMAHAN, CHARLOTTE LATIN: junior girls’ lacrosse player has 106 goals, 40 assists, 34 draw controls, and 27 caused turnovers this season, leading the Hawks to a 16-5 regular season record and the #1 seed in the NCISAA tournament.

CARLY MONTGOMERY, ARDREY KELL GIRLS SOCCER: Senior has committed to Texas, which started the season ranked No. 1 in the national poll. Last season, she anchored a defense that allowed 10 goals and had 19 shut outs. She was the 2022 SoMECK conference player of the year add was all state. This season she’s a team captain and a Gatorade NC player of the year nominee and has been chosen for the NC Las of the Carolinas all-star game in late June.

Regional girls athlete of the year

SAMYHA SUFFREN, CANNON SCHOOL GIRLS BASKEBALL: 2022-23 Ms. Basketball finalist is a top 70 recruit nationally by ESPN. Four-star national recruit. Led her team to the NCISAA state finals and was first team All Charlotte Observer. McDonald’s All-American nominee.

JAIDA MCGREW, MOUNTAIN ISLAND CHARTER GIRLS SOCCER, TRACK: McGrew, a sophomore, was named 2022 Donna Davis indoor MVP and won an NCHSAA performer of the week award. She set a school and meet record in the 55-meters, winning the NCHSAA state title. A five-time Charlotte Observer girls athlete of the week nominee, McGrew won the 1A/2A Catawba Shores league title (1st in 55 meters, 7.23 PR, school record; 1st, 800 relay; 2nd in 300 in PR and school record). Outdoors she’s set two school records through May 2. In soccer, she is among state 1A leaders with 29 goals through May 2. McGrew will be inducted into the National Honors Society in May

KIRSTEN LEWIS-WILLIAMS, LAKE NORMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: She averaged 20.6 points, 8.8 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 4.1 steals per game. The Charlotte Observer player of the year was also first-team all-state, a N.C./SC and East-West All-Star and a two-time conference and Iredell County player of the year. Lewis-Williams is a University of Buffalo commit.

EMMA NORRIS, NORTH IREDELL VOLLEYBALL, SOFTBALL: Senior was part of the NC 3A state champion and was Western Foothills conference player of the year. She was also the Iredell County, Western Regional and NCHSAA state finals most outstanding player. Norris was named NCHSAA 3A player of the year and led her softball team in sacrifices, stolen bases, on base percentage and fielding percentage.

MADISON SELF, EAST LINCOLN BASKETBALL/VOLLEYBALL: all conference in both sports; named the conference tournament MVP, and led the volleyball team to the playoffs four straight years. She led volleyball to a league title and basketball to three. The basketball team this year was 31-1 and regional runner-up.

KATHERINE HOPKINS, LINCOLNTON CROSS-COUNTRY/TRACK: Senior was 2A State Champion in cross country. Indoor track state Runner-up. Ranked 1st in the state in the 1 mile and 2 mile for 2A girls.

CHLOE NORMAN, WEST LINCOLN TENNIS: NCHSAA Double State Qualifier, All Conference, School record holder in Doubles wins. Basketball Honors: All Conference, All Gaston Gazette, Charlotte Observer Athlete of the Week, 1,000 point scorer. Softball Honors: All Conference, .333 batting average, 22 runs scored, 13 RBI, 9 walks, lead off batter, 4 stolen bases, 0 errors on the season, only 2 strike outs all year.

STELLA KERMES, CUTHBERTSON: cross-country state champion. Fastest 5k in the state. Gatorade player of the year. Indoor state runner up. Part of the national record-setting 4x800 relay team in track.

ELEKTRA KOLOURIS, WEDDINGTON LACROSSE: junior had 52 goals and 32 assists this season. Kolouris is a Duke commit

ANNA MCGOWAN, MARVIN RIDGE SOFTBALL: junior committed to NC State; 2023 SCC Player of Year; 2x All State; 2x All District; 3x All Conference; Team Captain; 2x Hot Stove Rising 2024 Star Award Winner; Union County MVP (2022); 2x Union County First Team; Leading County, Conference and School in Homeruns and RBIs; 2x SCC Conference Champion. Season stats: 92PA, .507BA, .565 OBP, 1.712 OPS, 38 hits, 8 doubles, 3 triples, 12 homeruns, 44 RBIs, 26 runs, 12 walks.

ANNIE MILLER, METROLINA CHRISTIAN CROSS-COUNTRY: Sophomore ran the fastest 800-meter indoor time in NC history (2:14.03) to finish runner up at adidas Indoor Nationals. Ranked as the No. 2 sophomore cross-country runner and was an all-state pick by NC Runners.

ARIA WEGH, MARVIN RIDGE TRACK: NCHSAA 4A Indoor State Championships Meet MVP.......Indoor State Champion in the 55m Hurdles along with State Runner-Up performances in the 55m Dash, 300m Dash, and High Jump. Outdoor Track & Field Season........SCC Conference Female Runner of the Year......Conference Champion in the 200m Dash, 100m Hurdles, 300m Hurdles and High Jump.........NCHSAA 4A Regional Champion in the 300m Hurdles.

ANNA HINDE, CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN: Softball star has led her team to the state finals and carries a weighted GPA of 4.294 (4.0 unweighted). Season stats: .550 batting average, .627 on base %, 1.060 slugging %, 10 doubles, 24 RBI, 32 runs, 17 walks, 6 home runs, starting shortstop with a .983 fielding %. First team all-conference and CISAA Player of the Year and all-state as a freshman in 2022 (2023 results not out yet). PSAT 1220, 2022 Charlotte Christian Timothy Award (“Service Above Self”), member of the National Junior Honor Society

JADEN REDFERN, NORTH MECKLENBURG: senior volleyball, basketball and softball player carries more than a 4.6 GPA. She’s ranked No. 3 in her class and will attend Duke this fall.

KELSEY SCIACCA, CHARLOTTE LATIN: freshman golfer won the CISAA Conference Championship and was the only Hawk to compete at the NCISAA State Championship, where she finished tied for 10th. She shot 78 at both championships, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA

CLAIRE SMITH, ARDREY KELL: a four-year starter on the soccer team, Smith has played in the ECNL regional league (one of the top in travel soccer) for Charlotte Soccer Academy since 2012. She’s ranked No. 6 of 856 students in Ardrey Kell’s senior class and has a GPA of 4.67, while taking 13 AP courses and four dual enrollment college courses. She’s a Jefferson Scholarship semifinalist, a National Merit Scholarship semifinal, a two-time DECA champ and she spent the summer before her senior year with the NCSSM Summer Math and Science program, founding the Girls Who Code STEM club at Ardrey Kell. She is also a classical pianist who has complete 12 levels of increased difficulty. She’s won Charlotte Music Festival awards and volunteers at local retirement communities. She’ll attend Virginia in the fall.

CHARLOTTE STAVIS, MALLARD CREEK: kicker for Football team also runs cross country and plays on the girls socer team. She broke the single-season school record for goals this season. Has better than a 4.0 GPA.

LILY TODD, INDEPENDENCE: four-year varsity volleyball and basketball player carries a 4.54 GPA and is ranked fifth in her 2023 class. She’ll attend Duke this fall and plans to major in Mechanical Engineering. Todd has maintained a job at Publix and enjoys weightlifting. She’s involved in many clubs at school and is one of 10 Patriots on the DREAM team (committed to be drug and alcohol free). She’s a Deputy Group Commander in ROTC, a member of the Orienteering team, Drill Team and Saber team. She’s also in the National Honor Society. She’s one of few students in the nation to earn two AFJROTC scholarships and was awarded the J-100 AFJROTC Character-In-Leadership Scholarship, which includes full tuition and costs to any four-year university with an Air-Force ROTC program. She also earned the AFJROTC Flight Academy Scholarship; this covers the full cost of the AFJROTC Flight Academy, which results in a private pilots’ certification.

AVA WILIAMS, BUTLER: junior has maintained an unweighted 4.0 for the current school year (and all three years at Butler) while taking AP, Honors and Dual Enrollment courses. Williams is a three-sport varsity athlete (tennis, basketball and softball). She plays a competitive regional travel softball schedule for the Bandits Elite Premier, and works a part time job at MARA. Her class rank qualified her to be selected as a Junior Marshall and inducted into National Honor Society. Ava was recently selected as a 23-24 Butler Dream Team member. Her current overall GPA is 4.313 (which does not yet include her current dual enrollment and AP course) and she recently committed to play softball at Roanoke College after high school. Ava finished the 2023 softball season with a .443 batting average and led the team with 17 stolen bases and a perfect fielding percentage of 1.000 and 93 putouts.

Regional girls scholar-athlete of the year

BRIE BIDDLE, CANNON SCHOOL: Participated in Softball and Cross Country. Senior has committed to Virginia for softball and was all-state in 2021 and 2022 and is a three-time all-conference plaeyr.

SOPHIA GUERRIERO, CONCORD: senior played volleyball, track and soccer. She was an all conference soccer player and is a member of her school’s National Honor Society, BETA Club and Spanish National Honor Society.

ELLEIGH WILLIAMS, NORTH IREDELL: tennis and softball player was a state qualifier in tennis. The senior carries a 4.6034 GPA.

SAMANTHA WHITAKER, LINCOLNTON: Track and soccer star will play soccer at Western Carolina.

RIYA PATEL, MARVIN RIDGE SOFTBALL: Senior plans to attend NC State and major in Biomedical Engineering. Four-year starter in softball was all-conference. She was on a 2022 Region 4 Powerade State Games champion. Other awards: 2022 All-American All Star Game; 2022 All-Academic Game; 2023 Nominee for Hot Stove Scholar Athlete Award. 2023 Season stats: 92 PA, .438 BA, 1.284 OPS, 35 hits, 8 doubles, 7 homeruns, 29 RBIs, 32 runs, 8 walks, 4 stolen bases. Academics: IB Student, A Honor Roll every semester, Academic Excellence Award in both Biology and English. Involved in 18 different clubs at MRHS, an officer in 8 of those including Student-Athlete Leadership Committee, MRHS Softball Team Captain, Student Council, National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society, Beta Club, Girls in Charlotte, MR Student Leadership Committee on School Climate, & Charlotte Football Club’s Captains Academy. Riya also volunteers as a tutor and piano teacher, and participated in a medical mission in Nicaragua last summer..

Mecklenburg County girls coach of the year

JENNIFER BAKER, NORTH MECKLENBURG GIRLS BASKETBALL: Queen City girls coach of the year and District coach of the year, Baker is NCBCA president and assistant coach on the East-West all-star team. Her Vikings reached the regional semifinals this year.

KEVIN HINDE, CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN SOFTBALL: Guided the Knights to their first ever softball state championship in 2021. Repeated as state champs in 2022. Record of 13-4 this year. The #1 seed in the NCISAA 4A playoffs as they seek to 3 peat as state champs.

KRISTY BOYLES, CHARLOTTE COUNTRY DAY GIRLS LACROSSE: founded and led Queen City Stars and now serving as Charlotte Director of Ultimate Charlotte Lacrosse Club. Above and beyond she’s an inspiring mother, raising three children with her husband. The CCDS Varsity Girls Lacrosse Team with a record of 11-7 is #2 in NCISAA D1 State Playoffs and likely heading to the State Championship game again to face Latin.

KARLYN DIXON, MALLARD CREEK GIRLS BASKETBALL: led young team to 2nd round of the playoffs, conference championship

LAUREN GALVANI, INDEPENDENCE GIRLS BASKETBALL: Southwestern 4A coach of the year and coached the conference player of year (Kam Kitchen). Galvani led the Patriots to their first league title in more than 10 years and also to the the third round of playoffs, despite missing a top NC junior K. Carson.

MIKE WEISS, CHARLOTTE LATIN GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY: As the head of the cross country program since 2004, Coach Weiss has led the girls’ team to six NCISAA titles and nine CISAA Conference championships, including one each this year. The Hawks defeated the 2nd place finishers by 24 (CISAA) and 22 (NCISAA) points, drawing on Coach Weiss’s training methods and approaches to teamwork. Senior Helen Hurden had a breakout season, winning the conference championship in 18:35.2, a time nearly 2 minutes faster than her junior-year best of 20:28.

Regional girls coach of the year

BRITTANY PASUT, CANNON SCHOOL GIRLS LACROSSE: taken a third year program to the second round of the NCISAA playoffs.

KELVIN DRAKEFORD, CANNON SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: NCISAA State Runner up

BILL MIDDLEBROOKS, CONCORD ACADEMY GIRLS BASKETBALL: led his team to its eighth MAC conference championship and his team won its second NCISAA 3A state in the past three years.

MACKENZIE GRAHAM, LAKE NORMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: Led Lake Norman to its first ever state championship appearance. The team went 31-1 this season, got Graham got her 100th win this season.

DAVE MARKLAND, NORTH IREDELL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: led team to a 33-0 record and a NC 3A state championship. The team was runner-up in the state in 2022 and is 73-3 in his three seasons.

JASON OTEY, EAST LINCOLN GIRLS BASKETBALL: team finished 31-1, broke school record in wins; won East Lincoln Winter Jam tournament. Western 3A regional runner-up.

KEN HILDERBRAN, WEST LINCOLN GIRLS TENNIS: conference coach of the year for two years running. Team is 14-0 in league play in that span.

DUSTIN ALLEN, CUTHBERTSON, BOYS AND GIRLS TRACK/CROSS-COUNTRY: boys, girls indoor state track champions. Boys and girls indoor and outdoor SCC coach of the year. Charlotte Observer indoor coach of the year. Teams currently have won 12 state titles in past seven years.

LINDA MCGOWAN, MARVIN RIDGE SOFTBALL: SCC conference coach of the year led her team an unbeaten SCC Conference Championship season. Current record of 21-3. and has advanced to the Elite 8.

ROBERT SALMINEN, WEDDINGTON GIRLS LACROSSE: Conference coach of the year led his team to an unbeaten run through league play and was nominated to coach the Bull City Tournament representing the Charlotte region.

Mecklenburg County girls team of the year

ARDREY KELL GIRLS SOCCER: 4A state runner up in 2022, losing on a PK shootout. This season, the Knights are ranked among the nation’s top 100 teams and have four Division I recruits.

CHARLOTTE LATIN GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY: CISAA and NCISAA Division I champs. No. 1 ranked independent school in North Carolina. No. 10 nationally.

LAKE NORMAN CHARTER GIRLS SOCCER: 14-0 in conference play and will play in third round of the playoffs Thursday, May 18

MALLARD CREEK GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM: Queen City 3A/4A tournament champions and reached second round of the playoffs. Young team had two seniors.

NORTH MECK GIRLS BASKETBALL: Vikings finished 27-3 and reached the NC 4A Western Regional semifinals. They were the Queen City regular-season champions.

CANNON GIRLS BASKETBALL: NCISAA Runner Up

CONCORD ACADEMY GIRLS BASKETBALL: NCISAA 3A state champions

EAST LINCOLN GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM: 31-1, ELHS Winter Jam Champions, WFAC Champions, 3A Western Region Runner up, broke school record in wins

LAKE NORMAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: nationally ranked for much of the season, the team won the NC 4A Western Regional and advanced to its first state final. Finished with just one loss. Greater Metro 4 Conference Champions. Western Regional Champions. Went undefeated into the State Championship game. Lost to Panther Creek.

NORTH IREDELL VOLLEYBALL: 33-0 NCHSAA 3A state champs. Top ranked all season and was 10-0 against top 25 ranked teams.

LINCOLNTON GIRLS SOCCER: team finished third in league play at 11-6-3 and reached the NC playoffs.

WEST LINCOLN TENNIS: Finished 15-3, 7-0 in league play and was conference champions.

MARVIN RIDGE SOFTBALL: Southern Carolinas Conference Champion w/ 10-0 record, Overall record 21-3 before a fourth round Elite 8 softball game Friday. Set new school records with 46 homeruns, 200 RBIs, 228 runs, and 1.144 OPS. Also this season: .946 Fielding, 2.8 ERA w/156 strikeouts. SCC Player of the Year (Anna McGowan), SCC Coach of the Year (Linda McGowan), Leading Union County in wins, homeruns, runs, and triples. Also recipient of NCHSAA Commissioner’s Cup for volunteer work.

METROLINA CHRISTIAN GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY: Won its 8th straight league title and had the best top 5 team average in conference history, more than 30 seconds faster than any other team. Was also best top 5 average in school history.

CUTHBERTSON GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS-COUNTRY: indoor state champions. Indoor conference champions. Cross-country state champions. Regional Nike champions. Top 10 national ranking. Outdoor conference champs.

WEDDINGTON GIRLS LACROSSE: 3-time back-to-back NCHSAA state champs were unbeaten in league play.

Boys/Girls Comeback Player of the year

POPPY FARRELL, CHARLOTTE COUNTRY DAY GIRLS LACROSSE: Senior received a serious concussion in the fall of 2022 which took her out of numerous activities, academics and her junior year lacrosse season. Farrell remained a devoted teammate her entire junior year, despite fighting migraines, vision and balance issues. She became a member of the Cum Laude society, was accepted to Duke University and overcame her fear of a repeat injury to become a Day One starter this season. She has started in every game, helping her team to a No. 2 seed in the NCISAA playoffs.

KIRA KLEINSCHMIDT, ARDREY KELL: junior lacrosse and field hockey player that tried lacrosse for the first time as a sophomore. She improved so much after her first year that she became a player the team looked to and was a dominant defender who eventually worked her way up to midfield.

ISHAUN ALI, MALLARD CREEK: 2023 football player returned from an ACL injury and earned a scholarship to Howard.

SAM MERLI, INDEPENDENCE BASEBALL: returned from a torn ACL after just eight months to become an all-conference player this spring

DESMOND KENT, CENTRAL CABARRUS: Junior missed 10 games with broken wrist and returned to become a dangerous sixth man. Was named 3A State Championship MVP. All- Observer Sixth Man of the Year

SAM MARTIN, LAKE NORMAN: football player and wrestler is a senior who lost his junior season in Week 2 when he suffered a back injury. Doctors thought he might not ever play gain. He had to wear a turtle shell brace for weeks. This year, he was cleared to play and became an all conference defensive lineman in the Greater Metro conference and signed a college scholarship to D1 Presbyterian.

FINLEY MCLEOD, ARDREY KELL: girls lacrosse/field hockey player had 9th grade year cut short due to COVID and her 10th grade year was a shortened season. She still reached 100 career goals in her senior year.

COLIN MUMFORD, MARVIN RIDGE: soccer/swimmer tore ACL in 2021. Came back for boys soccer in the fall. Was named team captain and all-conference. On the swim team, Mumford was a first-time diver who was named All-County Diver of the Year. Swimming. All-conference star was a 4A Western Regional qualifier in the 50 Freestyle, 200 Freestyle Relay, Diving.
