An upside down take on the GOP pursuit of Biden

Westfield, Mass.: Re “In-reach-ment inquiry” (editorial, Sept. 3), reprinted by The Republican in Springfield, Mass.: Your intent is to try and discredit the present GOP talks about possible impeachment inquiries into President Biden via what you call “unclear or absurd” evidence provided by none other than the president’s son, Hunter Biden. Wow! How far the media is willing to go to protect one political party and destroy another.

This is the hypocrisy of lemon-yellow journalism that should bring tears to anyone’s eyes who reads it. This editorial is more proof that what the left wants to accuse the right of, it has already committed 10 times over. Tell me if these terms sound familiar: reverse-engineering an investigation, kangaroo courts, “we commit to the principle of innocent until proven guilty,” “corrosive long-term impact on this country’s institutions” and my personal favorite, “politically motivated investigations are a potent form of harassment in and of themselves.”

The Daily News ends this Bizarro World editorial with, “These frivolous investigations both sap credibility in the entire democratic system and make real accountability much harder to pursue.” What we should take away from this is that the Daily News is not a place to look for credibility or accountability, or anything close to what used to be called a newspaper. Our own local newspaper, The Republican, thinking it was fine to reprint this on their pages makes me wonder about their credibility and accountability also. Rich Hilbert

MIA

Brooklyn: As the stark counterpoint to the magnificence and courage we saw on Sept. 11, 2001, on Monday we witnessed the absence and cowardice of our president, Joe Biden. Afraid to face NYC, he has opted to spend the 22nd anniversary of this sacred day in Alaska. Let us not forget! Beatrice Perilli-Martin

Ducked out

Margate, Fla.: Several of the 9/11 mourners, when speaking and memorializing their murdered relatives at Ground Zero, took the time to point out that former Mayor Mike Bloomberg remained for the full memorial ceremony. Mayor Adams and Vice President Kamala Harris rushed away after a perfunctory appearance. Those 9/11 mourners said it all. Richard Sherman

Courage amid the carnage

Stamford, Conn.: I originally wrote this a number of years ago, but the pain and sadness of loss doesn’t go away — I feel the same today as I did 22 years ago: Every year on Sept. 11, it breaks my heart to remember the friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances that we lost. I am forever grateful for the bravery and selfless sacrifices of the first responders, the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, EMTs and all the doctors, nurses and hospital staff. They rushed toward danger as we ran from it. I would also like to acknowledge the unsung heroes. The MTA, LIRR and Metro-North workers who stood by their posts to ensure that we all got out of the city safely. Thank you and God bless you all. This was America at its finest. I witnessed the very best of New Yorkers and America. We seem to have lost that spirit somewhere. Michael P. O’Mahoney

Somber recital

Brooklyn: We will never forget the lost souls of our people on 9/11. It is heartbreaking to this day as they read off the names and age of death. What a life they should have had. David DiBello

Remembering together

Pine Plains, N.Y.: This year’s 9/11 memorial brought back the intense emotions of that terrible day. Watching the TV news showing the first burning building, we thought it a terrible accident that transformed in a moment into burning anger realizing it was a vile terrorist attack. My first reaction seeing the second plane smash into the tower was, “How dare they do that to New York, the one place on Earth that accepts everyone, welcoming them into our city not for who they are but for what they can contribute.” All the trivial divisions we put up between ourselves vanished in that moment. For the first time in my life, there were no longer any hyphenated Americans. We were one, we were all simply Americans. For a period of time, we truly had achieved our dream of being one united people. It was breathtaking. If for only a single day, on the anniversary, we remembered that unity. Joseph McCluskey

Malicious history

Bronx: Let us not forget that 50 years ago, on Sept. 11, 1973, the democratically elected president of Chile, Salvador Allende, was murdered with the backing and support of the United States government to prevent him from nationalizing his country’s resources for the benefit of its people. The U.S. government put Augusto Pinochet, a brutal dictator, in power, leading to the murder and disappearance of thousands. Richie Nagan

Money pit

Maspeth: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy fired his defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, due to corruption. He also fired all the heads of the draft boards due to corruption, including taking $500 bribes to evade the draft, according to the BBC. Meanwhile, President Biden asked Congress for another $24 billion of our tax dollars, on top of the $100 billion we already sent to fight another forever war after pulling out of the Afghanistan forever war. Wes Warchol

No-good look

Bronx: I hope the latest fad of women on TV wearing their hair like a lion’s mane disappears. There is a series that is set in the 1900s but they have some of the women’s hair in the lion’s mane style. Really? Mary Caggiano

Happily wedded

Madera, Calif.: In this time of adversity for the LGBTQ community, we see small glimmers of hope — hope for a better world where love knows no gender, where love is love. Hope for a world where two people who love each other, no matter their gender, can be married. This hope has been expressed in the marriage of Robin Roberts to her longtime girlfriend. The LGBTQ community wishes them a long and happy marriage together. Robyn Angelique Harvey

Blowout

Astoria: Dallas Cowboys, 40, New York Giants, 0 — and it was a Giants home game, no less. How about Cowmen and G-boys? Thankfully, it’s only one game. We’ve got some hills to climb, fellas. Go Big Blue! Richard Melnick

Persona non grata

Bronx: I am a longtime Jets fan, as are many others. It would be reprehensible if the organization continues to identify with the clown that calls himself “Fireman Ed.” We are trying to establish a new identity with Aaron Rodgers and a number of bright young prospects. This attention-starved, so-called fan quit on this team many years ago, announcing his “retirement” when they were struggling. True fans stay with a team regardless of ups and down. And now he wants to return as hopes brighten. Unreal. Boo him every time he stands up to lead cheers. Disgraceful. A year of him would be unbearable. Roger Metzger

Open and shut

Boston: A few thoughts after watching the U.S. Open: Two weeks of fist pumps and come-ons. Is this the extent of our gesticular and syllabic evolution? Are women’s marathons 13.1 miles? Do women bowl for an abbreviated five frames? It’s time women started playing five-set grand slams. Equal prize money demands it. The prestige of the Wheaties box all comes down to the luck of the draw. This year it was Jelena Ostapenko and Daniil Medvedev, who knocked off top seeds Iga Świątek and Carlos Alcaraz, clearing the path for the tournament’s ultimate victors. For two weeks, Americans’ classlessness is put on worldwide display — cacophonous applause for a foreign opponent’s errors and earsplitting cheers for the American (a modicum of grace and humility would be nice). There is no GOAT. Forget never playing with a wooden racket — Serena Williams never played Martina Navratilova. Scott R. Hammond

Take it off the top

Bronx: I have a novel idea: Instead of cutting 5% from city agencies that supply vital services to the people of New York City, why don’t all the NYC politicians cut their salaries by 5%? We have many quality-of-life issues that need attention and additional services, not less. Our children need all the resources we can give them, especially since COVID. Remember, they are our future. Christina D’Angelo
