Where are bike advocates on pedestrian safety?

Woodside: In the Wednesday, Sept. 27 issue of the Daily News, it was reported that another pedestrian was hit by a bicycle, this time on Fifth Ave., causing the pedestrian to suffer a skull fracture. On Sept. 5, another bicyclist struck a pedestrian in Chinatown, killing that person. In both incidents, the bike riders took off and have yet to be apprehended. It is probably easy to guess that these riders were either going the wrong way on a one-way street or were going through a red light.

Where is the outrage from transportation advocates like Transportation Alternatives when these accidents happen? Had these pedestrians been hit by a car or truck, these groups would be in front of every media outlet demanding the city reconfigure the street so that fewer motor vehicles can go through, and they would demand yet more bike lanes (many of which seem to be underused, or not used at all).

When the bicyclists are the cause of the accident, these groups seem to be very silent, as if they are fine with people who ride bicycles, e-bikes and scooters not having to follow the rules of the road.

Just a reminder — those rules would be stopping at a red light or stop sign, going the correct way on a one-way street and not riding on the sidewalk. Tom Rice

Increase oversight

Brooklyn: Drugs and guns are found at day care centers. Maybe inspections (which should always be done as a surprise) need to be recorded and reviewed to ensure that they are done thoroughly. Louise Veneroni

The long game

Monroe, N.J.: It took so long to investigate and bring Hunter Biden to trial. I guess we will have to wait to see the Trump kids’ investigations come to fruition — Ivanka’s involvement with Chinese manufacturing contracts, the boys’ fundraising misinformation and use of the Trump properties for foreign representatives’ use, among other things. A shame that this “Keeping Up with the Political Kids” show overshadows the American people’s interests and needs in Congress. Katherine A. Moloney

Bite pass

Staten Island: Why is it that President Biden’s dog Commander has now bitten an 11th person between 2022 and 2023? Most dogs are euthanized after two bites. Does this one have diplomatic immunity or are they ignoring his bad behavior like his big brother Hunter? Myra B. Goodman

Cut to the chase

Medford, L.I.: With former President Trump up by anywhere from 40 to 50 points in polls, it amuses me when I see headlines like “And then there were seven” regarding the remaining seven Republican candidates for president who made the second debate. You call this a competitive contest? If this were a professional wrestling match, it’s more like Andre the Giant versus the Seven Dwarves! Isn’t there a mercy rule for politics like in softball when the score gets out of hand? If not, there should be, at least for this instance. This election is super critical in getting our country back on track after what will be a four-year nightmare. We need to give Trump, who deserves every break imaginable, maximum advantage to rescue our country. And that starts with shutting down the useless primaries and focusing all party resources on defeating President Biden before he gets another four years to finish driving us off a cliff. Luana Dunn

No mention

Bronx: Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff who has served his country most honorably for all these years, was marked for assassination by Donald J. Trump. The MAGA Master was also deemed by a judge to be a fraudster. Yet no one on the stage of the debates brought those issues up on Wednesday night. The only thing I can say is the Republican field consists of Donald Duck and the Seven Schmucks! Pauline Graham Binder

Blame Biden

Brooklyn: President Biden’s decision to join the United Auto Workers picket line is as phony as a show of support can be. It’s like a firefighter starting a fire, then coming back to look like a hero by saving lives. The strike is due, at least in part, to Biden’s inflationary policies. The same money that supported these workers before Biden’s destruction of our economy no longer allows some of them to make ends meet. From day one, Biden seemed bent on reversing all of Trump’s policies, regardless of how destructive it may be. Biden has apparently done such a good job of it that he has also reversed all the prosperity Trump has created. I fail to understand why anyone would even think of voting for Biden. Josh Greenberger

Hobbled agency

Manhattan: Someone is trying to put the post office out of business. My husband tried to buy stamps online. At checkout, he got a message that, because of Hurricane Idalia, the service was unavailable (presumably, the USPS located its processing center in a severe climate zone). So, I visited the local post office only to be informed that they were temporarily out of stamps! I wonder why they opened for business. Instead of expanding the services offered by the USPS to other communications and shipping needs, either Congress or the USPS’ administrators are attempting to get rid of it. Shame. Michele P. Brown

Lead with local

Manhattan: Thanks to Voicer Nathaniel Batchelder for reminding us to look closer to home than the presidency for eco-social action. While Republicans in Congress put up barriers to urgently needed climate programs, here in New York, Gov. Hochul and Public Service Commissioner Rory Christian’s efforts to replace gas with offshore wind and the ramp-up of land-based wind and solar are to be applauded. While offshore wind costs have risen with inflation, the cost of climate inaction is far more dire, and the Inflation Reduction Act will keep expenses down so New Yorkers can experience the economic and environmental benefits of renewable energy — like new union jobs and no climate or local air pollution. Let’s make sure New York meets its mandate to power 4.5 million homes with offshore wind by 2035 — and to have zero emissions by 2040! — by opening up new rounds of contracting and preventing the gas industry from greenwashing and introducing legal loopholes. Estelle Bajou

Perfect fit

Manhattan: Since we celebrate Black History Month each year and talk reparations, what say we return to a practical, everyday opportunity to show our true American principles? Demonstrate to the world that we don’t just talk the talk: Let’s give Colin Kaepernick and the Jets a chance at real sportsmanship (“Kap wanted to go green,” Sept. 28). It’ll give a boost to viewers and the big bucks that the NFL craves. Grow a pair, Roger Goodell. Earn your paycheck. Neil J. Pollicino

Can’t do business

Massapequa, L.I.: Target is closing more stores, two in Seattle, three in Portland, three in San Francisco and another in Harlem. The left-wing liberals will try and spin this into a racial issue, saying Target is leaving neighborhoods of color. The reason Target and other major corporations are fleeing these cities is crime! These stores are being looted on a daily basis by emboldened thugs who have no fear of consequences. George Soros-backed district attorneys in these cities have all pushed for no bail and all practice the catch-and-release method. Many of the individuals who have been caught have lengthy arrest records and need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. They aren’t shoplifting to feed their families, they’re stealing to line their pockets with cash. As always, honest, hardworking Americans end up paying for it with higher prices. Without law and order, these cities will fail. Michael Greaney

It’s all too much

Brooklyn: I’m finally at a loss for words. The presidential primary debate was a circus. Target is closing its iconic Harlem store due to theft, yet Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg says crime is down. There’s a day care/fentanyl house of horrors where a 1-year-old is killed. You think NYC dropped the ball? There are more e-bike, scooter and speeding accidents than ever. Rats, rats, rats and rain, rain, rain. I’m not walking on sunshine today. Mariann Tepedino
