Reading Eagle: United Way of Berks County shopping spree winner grabs more than $1,100 in items at supermarket

Apr. 21—Jorge Velazques grabbed more than $1,100 worth of items during his 3-minute shopping spree at a Wyomissing supermarket Wednesday.

Velazques of Allentown was randomly selected as the winner of the shopping spree at Redner's from people who contributed $4 or more per week to the United Way of Berks County's 2021 campaign.

Velazques, an employee of East Penn Manufacturing Co., filled multiple shopping carts with piles of meats, cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, totaling $1,178.

Redner's has hosted the event for nine years.

Last year, more than $11 million was raised to support community needs within United Way's focus areas of education, financial stability, health and safety net services. The 2022 campaign launches in mid-September. United Way annual program investments help more than 150,000 Berks Countians annually.
