Reading man shot to death in northern Berks

Nov. 12—An 18-year-old Reading man was fatally shot early Saturday at a Maxatawny Township housing complex that serves Kutztown University students, according to the Lehigh County coroner's office.

Diego Velazquez died of a gunshot wound to the body, and the death was ruled a homicide, officials said.

The incident took place at 12:52 a.m. in the area of the 400 block of Baldy Road at the Advantage Point housing complex, a statement from the coroner's office said.

Velazquez was pronounced dead at 2:14 a.m. at Lehigh Valley Hospital near Allentown. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday, according to the Lehigh coroner.

Kutztown University issued a message to the campus community Saturday afternoon that said Velazquez was not a KU student. It said the perpetrators were believed to have left the area and that it was safe to engage in regular activities. It reminded the community that counseling resources are available on campus for those who need them.

The coroner said state police and the Berks County district attorney's office are taking part in the investigation.
