Ready to dispose of your Christmas tree? Here's what to do in the Akron area

Whether you're ready to ditch your Christmas tree just days after the holiday passes or you like to hang on to the holiday season a bit longer, there are options on how to dispose of your tree once you decide it's time. There is an expiration date though, as most cities and townships will collect — or in some cases you drop off — your bare Christmas tree through the end January. All decorations and tinsel must be removed.

Here's a guide to Christmas tree disposal options throughout the area.

Summit County

Metro Parks: Trees cleared of all decorations and tinsel may be dropped off for recycling Dec. 26 through Jan. 31 at these locations: Little Turtle Pond at Firestone Metro Park, 2400 Harrington Rd., Akron; Brushwood Area at Furnace Run Metro Park, 4955 Townsend Rd., Richfield Township; main entrance (rear parking lot, near the sled hill) at Goodyear Heights Metro Park, 2077 Newton St., Akron; Nimisila Reservoir Metro Park, South Main 2 Lot, 5531 S. Main St., Green; Treaty Line Area of Sand Run Metro Park, 995 Treaty Line Rd., Akron; and Big Oak Area of Silver Creek Metro Park, 5199 Medina Line Rd., Norton.

Visitors can look for signs that identify each drop-off area in the parking lots. The park district typically gets about 1,000 Christmas trees, which it turns into mulch and uses in the parks. For information, call 330-867-5511 or visit summitmetroparks.org.
