Ready-to-eat bacon topping products sold locally recalled over metal contamination concerns

The Hometown IGA in Clark County and the Jungle Jim’s International Market in Butler County are among a list of retailers being warned about the recall of ready-to-eat bacon topping products that may be contaminated with metal or other extraneous materials.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service initially announced the Smithfield Packaged Meats Corp. recall in May, but amended it this week because additional products have been identified that contain the bacon toppings.

The IGA, 7381 Dayton Road, in Enon, and the Jungle Jim’s in Fairfield are included in a list of distributors and retailers the products were sent to across the nation.

Products, which all bear establishment number “EST. 27384″ inside the USDA mark of inspection, include:

  • “Golden Crisp Patrick Cudahy Precooked Bacon Topping”

  • “Smithfield Precooked bacon topping”

  • “Golden Crisp Patrick Cudahy Fully Cooked Bacon Topping Applewood Smokes”

  • “Smithfield Fully Cooked Bacon Topping”

  • “Member’s Mark Fully Cooked Bacon Crumbles”

The problem was discovered after the firm received a customer complaint reporting they found metal in the RTE bacon topping product.

There have been no confirmed reports of injuries or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact Smithfield Consumer Affairs hotline at 1-844-342-2596.
