Get ready for a heat wave, SLO County. Here’s how hot it could get

Get ready for some more heat, San Luis Obispo County.

A heatwave is expected to roll into the area beginning Sunday through Wednesday.

Excessive heat watches were issued by the National Weather Service for inland areas throughout the Central Coast from San Miguel south to Santa Maria and Cuyama.

Temperatures in the inland areas are expected to rise up to the low 100 degrees. On the coast and in San Luis Obispo, expect temperatures in the mid 70 degrees to low 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service’s Friday forecast.

San Miguel will see temperatures up to 100 degrees on Sunday, 106 degrees on Monday, 107 degrees on Tuesday and 106 degrees on Wednesday, the Weather Service predicted.

Those in Paso Robles can expect highs of 99 degrees on Sunday rising to 105 on Monday, 106 on Tuesday and 104 on Wednesday, according to the Weather Service.

With a high of 95 degrees on Sunday, Atascadero residents will see temperatures rise on Monday to 103 degrees, 104 degrees on Tuesday and 100 degrees on Wednesday.

In San Luis Obispo, temperatures will be notably cooler: A high of 86 degrees is forecast for Sunday, followed by 90 degrees on Monday, 91 on Tuesday and 87 on Wednesday.

It may be smart to head to the beach during the heat next week as coastal areas such as Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and Avila Beach are not expected to see temperatures over 80 degrees, according to the Weather Service.

Since this is normally the hottest time of the year for the Central Coast, temperature records aren’t expected to be broken, the Weather Service said.

How to stay cool in the heat

Cooling centers are open at public libraries and senior centers in the region.

To avoid heat-related illnesses, the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department advises that residents stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible.

People should avoid exercising or working outdoors during the hottest times of day, the department advised. While outdoors, wear lightweight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.

Keeping a spray bottle of water in the fridge can help you cool down quickly from the heat, and it’s smart to drink more water than you’d normally drink, the department said.
