Get ready for longer lines now that Disneyland's Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge is open to all

The past three weeks at Disneyland have been the calm before the Star Wars storm. Crowds have been lighter than usual, but park officials expect a spike in visitors when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens June 24 with no reservations required.

The 14-acre land will be open on a first-come, first-served basis, meaning the earlier visitors arrive, the better their chances to be admitted to the galaxy far far away.

Reservations will no longer be required to enter the land, although admission will be restricted if Galaxy's Edge becomes too crowded.

Those who want to have a drink or build a lightsaber will need to make same-day reservations, however. Oga's Cantina and Savi's Workshop have proven to be among the most popular stops in the Black Spire Outpost.

Larger crowds expected

Park officials have prepared for an expected surge on Monday. The past three weeks have been considered a soft opening, as the required reservations tamped down the crowds.

But now the land is open to all, making the jump to light-speed. Waits for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run — the land's only ride until Rise of the Resistance opens later this year — have been averaging 30 to 45 minutes. Officials expect lines to be considerably longer starting Monday.

Still, an unseen force will be employed to keep crowds manageable. Once a certain number of visitors enter Galaxy's Edge — park officials won't divulge that number — it will trigger a virtual queue that will manage the traffic flow.

Know before you go: Here's what you can't bring to the park

Here’s how the virtual queue works

First, download the Disneyland app. It’s the most convenient way to obtain a "boarding pass" once the virtual queue is activated.

Once you’re in the park, open the app and go to the Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge status page. If entry requires a boarding pass (the virtual queue), tap “Join Boarding Group” and choose the number of people in your party. You’ll need to link everyone’s tickets; the app will walk you through the process.

Enable push notifications so that when it’s your turn, you’ll get the alert to report. You’ll have a two-hour window to enter, allowing you to finish whatever you may be doing at the moment.

No phone? Here's how to get a boarding pass

Head to one of the five Galaxy’s Edge-dedicated kiosks to receive a paper boarding pass (much like getting a Fastpass). Each member of your party will need a boarding pass. Kiosks are located near Splash Mountain, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones and It’s a Small World.

With boarding passes in hand, check the digital signs scattered around the park to see when your number is up. You’ll have a two-hour window in which to enter.

Reservations required to drink, build a lightsaber

Visitors hoping to experience Oga’s Cantina or Savi’s Workshop will need two things — a credit card and an early wake-up call.

Reservations will be available each day at 7 a.m. If the initial crowds have been any indication, those reservations are likely to go quickly.

For Oga’s Cantina, visit the Disneyland website or use the app to reserve spots. Click on an available time slot. (You don't have to be 21 to enter.)

There is no limit to the size of your party, but two caveats: You must list each name (have everyone’s ID ready at the door), and you’ll have to put down a $10 deposit per person. That money will be returned to your card as long as everyone shows. You will be charged $10 for each no-show. Those slots are valuable and Disney knows it.

Once inside, visitors are allotted 45 minutes and no more than two drinks. No one will be monitoring time spent inside, park officials said, as most guests have found 45 minutes more than adequate and leave within that time frame.

Reservations for Savi's Workshop operate essentially the same way (via website or app), expect for two things: You can only reserve for three people (one builder and two spectators), and you must pay for the lightsaber up front (about $212 with tax). Your credit card will be charged whether or not you show.

Reservations to Oga’s Cantina and Savi's Workshop come with a side benefit: You may enter Galaxy’s Edge an hour before your time slot without having to join the virtual queue. And once inside the land, you may stay there as long as you want.

What about Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disney World?

As of now, officials have no plans to employ reservations or a virtual queue when Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge opens Aug. 29 at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida.

That may change if visitors jam the new land, but Disney World has a huge advantage over Disneyland when it comes to crowd management.

With four theme parks and two water parks to absorb guests, Disney World offers far more options. In addition, it is offering many passholders a complimentary preview of the new land prior to its opening, which also may take some of the pressure off Galaxy's Edge.
