Are you ready to get the most out of Prime Day? Here's what you need to know

The world's largest e-commerce company, Amazon has created its own summer shopping season, and it begins today with Prime Day.

Prime Day — which is actually two days — is designed to create a summertime shopping frenzy. Amazon says it will offer the lowest prices so far this year on select products from brands like Bose, GAP, Hey Dude and Theragun.

What is Prime Day?

Prime Day is a 48-hour sale that originally began in 2015 to celebrate Amazon's 20th anniversary. Amazon has created a summer shopping extravaganza at a time when most folks are thinking about vacations, barbecues and summer camps. This year Prime Day 2023 is July 11-12 and it features discounts and deals aimed exclusively at Prime members.

What sectors will have the best deals?

The best deals from Prime Day 2023 will likely be in apparel/fashion and electronics, according to information provided by Amazon from Yoni Mazor, co-founder of GETIDA, an Amazon marketplace service provider. Mazor says that manufacturers and retailers have overstocked on those kind of items likely because of expected slowdowns in the economy and because of lingering supply chain complications associated with the global pandemic.

What are the most popular items to shop for during Prime Day?

Amazon-branded products are sold most aggressively at lower prices and can be a good deal for consumers. These include "Amazon Kindle tablets, Amazon Ring devices and Amazon Alexa gadgets," Mazor said.

So electronics and apparel will have the best discounts?

Among many other deals, Amazon says to expect 75% off on select Amazon devices, including the "invite-only deal" on 43” Fire TV Omni Series, the Fire TV Stick (3rd Gen), and Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen) and Ring Battery Doorbell Plus, Pioneer and TCL smart TVs with Fire TV built in, Kindle Scribe, and the Fire Max 11 tablet. You can also expect 60% off on some Gap apparel and half-off Amazon-exclusive clothing, shoes, and handbags from The Drop.

What's the best Prime Day strategy?

Know your prices beforehand. The easiest way to spot a great deal is to know the typical price of the items you have your eye on. Then when you see a discount, you can pounce.

Are surprise deals planned?

To keep customers checking back for more things to buy, Amazon is boasting that it will offer more deals than any Prime Day event before. New deals will drop every 30 minutes during select periods of Prime Day.

What is Prime?

What does Prime Day look like in Rockford?

Amazon employs about 1,200 people at its logistics operation at the Chicago Rockford International Airport where 300,000 packages come in and out on an average day on eight in-bound and eight out-bound daily cargo planes, Amazon Air Rockford General Manager Mike Berg said.

The air hub has been hiring for about five weeks, building up its team to prepare for Prime Day and the summer sales season, Berg said.

"The team is fired up inside. They are fired up working safely on the ramp, and this is a really exciting week for our team," Berg said. "The goal for Prime because of what the customers are ordering is to make sure we are filling those planes as full as possible and serving all the customers."
