Look for peak fall foliage in Georgia? Here's when color will be just right for leaf peeping

Are you ready for sweater weather and all things pumpkin spice?

With autumn approaching, fall foliage lovers — also known as leaf peepers — can begin to plan out when to see leaves change to the reds, yellows and browns of fall.

So, when can we expect to see peak fall color in Georgia? The official first day of fall is Sept. 23 but the best fall foliage won't take over Georgia until nearly a month later.

When will fall foliage be peak color in Georgia?

The Farmer's Almanac predicts that peak season in Georgia will be Oct. 19 to Nov. 4.

The 2023 Fall Foliage Prediction map from SmokyMountains.com looks more closely at when each county is likely to see leaves turn colors, ranging from minimal change to past-peak.

If you are wanting an early glimpse of fall foliage, a small part of northeast Georgia, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is likely to start seeing partial fall color as early as late September or early October.

Most of north Georgia — including Atlanta and Athens — will see peak color around Nov. 6.

Middle Georgia is expected to have peak color the following week (on or near Nov. 13) and then south Georgia is predicted to have peak color by Nov. 20, just in time for Thanksgiving.
