Ready to yell ‘play Free Bird’? Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top coming back for Rupp Arena concert

Classic rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top are coming back to Lexington.

“The Sharp Dressed Simple Man Tour” will play Rupp Arena on March 28, 2024, with Black Stone Cherry opening the concert.

Lynyrd Skynyrd is celebrating the group’s 50th anniversary this of the band’s critically acclaimed debut album ‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-’nérd ‘Skin-’nérd,’ which included the hit song “Free Bird.”

Today, Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with a current line-up featuring Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Damon Johnson, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Keith Christopher, Peter Keys, Carol Chase and Stacy Michelle, according to the news release.

Kentucky guitarist now part of ZZ Top

ZZ Top, which has been playing for more than 50 years, now includes Central Kentucky guitarist Elwood Francis, who succeeded the late bass guitarist Dusty Hill.

Hill died in July 2021; Hill, guitarist Billy Gibbons and drummer Frank Beard formed ZZ Top in Texas in 1968. Francis, the band’s longtime guitar tech, was Hill’s pick to replace him.

Both bands have previously played Rupp Arena multiple times.

Tickets for the show go on sale 10 a.m. Nov. 3, with artist presale live 10 a.m. Oct. 31 until 10 p.m. Nov. 2. Go to lynyrdskynyrd.com/#tour for tickets and select VIP packages.

Rupp Club ticket prices are $225-$249, including parking, souvenir lanyard, food and access to a private club bar and merchandise, and are on sale now.
