REAL ID in Louisiana: What to know about how to get one, when you need it
BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — Louisiana residents will need a REAL ID by a May 2025 deadline to get on domestic flights and access certain federal buildings, officials say.
The change happened after Congress passed an act in 2005 after a recommendation to “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses,” the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles said.
It doesn’t appear much different from older state-issued licenses or identification cards. A REAL ID has a gold circle with a star cutout.
The use of REAL IDs will be enforced starting May 7, 2025.

The OMV said applicants must show proof of identity, evidence of lawful status in the country, birth date, social security number and two proofs of principal residence.
If it’s your first time getting a REAL ID, the OMV said you will need to visit one of its locations in person.
The cost to get a REAL ID will be the same as getting an identification card that isn’t REAL ID compliant.
