No one watches a movie in a vacuum. And it's hard to remember a movie that was as beset by gossip and rumor as "Don't Worry Darling."

Director Olivia Wilde's film was making headlines long before it was scheduled to come out in theaters on Sept. 23.

And for all the wrong reasons.

Shia LaBeouf left the film. Was he fired? Did he quit? He was replaced by Harry Styles, who became involved with Wilde. This, evidently, didn't go over well with Florence Pugh, who subsequently did next to nothing to promote the film — which is most unusual.

Movie sets don't have to be happy places. Supposedly Richard Gere and Debra Winger didn't get along while filming "An Officer and a Gentleman," yet still managed to have great on-screen chemistry. (It's called "acting.") If the movie is good enough, the rumors start to fade.

Unfortunately, "Don't Worry Darling" — aside from Pugh's brilliant performance, which is matched by Chris Pine's — is a middling movie, nice to look at, but one whose story doesn't hold up.

In this case, the drama was good for gossip columns. For audiences, not so much.

Here's what else to watch this weekend.
