Can this “ice cream ball” really turn sports into a cooking method?

This viral gadget might look like a soccer ball, but it’s actually an ice cream maker. Apparently, this thing will make homemade ice cream all by itself — all you have to do is take it outside and play with it.

It sounds too good to be true. You can just go outside, kick around a ball for 20 minutes and then get homemade ice cream?

That’s why we had to find out for ourselves. So we ordered one of these, put on our sporty clothes and got ready to test it. To see what happened, watch the clip above or keep reading below.

How does the ice cream ball work?

Basically, there are three steps to using this thing.

  1. There are two chambers inside of the ball. To start, fill up the first one with all the ingredients for your favorite homemade ice cream recipe (we went for strawberry).

  2. Then, fill the smaller chamber with lots of ice and about a half cup of rock salt. Seal both chambers back with their respective lids.

  3. Now it’s playtime. Take the ball outside and get it moving for around 20 or 25 minutes. That could mean kicking it, throwing it, running with it, rolling it down a hill — really, anything at all.

And that’s it. After that, you should have a rewarding batch of fresh ice cream.

Our review: Is this ice cream ball really worth it?

This thing definitely works, and it definitely makes some very, very good homemade ice cream (homemade is always better, obviously). But, it does take a little bit of work to get there.

Twenty minutes of physical activity may not sound like a lot, but it becomes a lot pretty quickly. That’s because you’ve got to constantly keep the ball in motion to let the ice cream churn. And sometimes, it can take more than 20 minutes for this thing to work its magic.

Also, it’s not very versatile as a sports ball. We tried playing basketball, volleyball and plenty of other sports with this thing, but it ultimately only worked well for soccer (and, strangely, as a medicine ball for ab workouts).

So, yes, this thing makes great ice cream. But it’s fair to ask: Is the juice worth the squeeze? If you don’t have a full soccer team at your disposal, maybe not.
