The Reason ‘Big Little Lies’ Isn’t Returning for Another Season Is Pretty Disappointing

  • Big Little Lies is nearing the end of season 2 and probably won’t be back for a third.

  • The reason the HBO show isn’t returning is a little disappointing.

Somehow, the second season of Big Little Lies is nearly over already. As if that weren’t bad enough, apparently the show isn’t returning for another season, which means no more iconic Renata Klein moments! No more Mary-Louise screams! No more of Ed Mackenzie’s passive-aggressiveness! And according to some sources, the reason the show isn’t coming back is all down to the A-list cast.

According to the Daily Mail and TV Line, a “show boss” from HBO named Casey Bloys said the level of talent on the show is just too good and it’s hard to lock everyone down for another season. He said, “The reality is, they are some of the busiest actresses working in Hollywood. I just think it’s not realistic.” Ugh. This sucks.

But don’t get me wrong: The fact that these A-list women are booking (and creating!) so many jobs is amazing and should definitely be applauded. However, it’s a little disappointing that they probably can’t work out their schedules to film another go at this. Speaking on behalf of the entire BLL fandom (I just appointed myself, sorry!), we can even wait a couple years until everyone’s schedule is cleared! Honestly, IDK if I can live in a world where BLL and Game of Thrones no longer consume every waking thought I have.

Bloys seems to feel the same way, saying, “Look, if they all came to me and said, ‘We worked out all of our schedules!’ then sure. But I just don’t think it’s realistic.”

Bloys does have some insight that might help fill the BLL-size hole in your heart though. If you’re obsessed with Nicole Kidman, she’s going to be working with HBO on her new show, The Undoing. And some of the other actors have HBO gigs lined up too. Bless.
