Mission: Impossible star Rebecca Ferguson has addressed Ilsa Faust's fate following Dead Reckoning's fight in Venice.

As fans of the blockbuster spy franchise will recall, Ferguson's shadowy agent was bumped off by terrorist Gabriel (played by Ozark's Esai Morales), but while speaking to Entertainment Tonight, the Swedish actress suggested the timing was right.

"Well, I mean, sometimes those three-picture deals you have in Hollywood, they end, and actors have the possibility of saying no. And we were at that point," she said.

"Mission is such a huge dedication, and I've done it now, and it's fantastic. And it's amazing, and [Christopher McQuarrie] and Tom [Cruise] wrote this incredible character.

"There's just that much you can do with a character, I find, and I'm entitled to my own opinion on this too. I want her to go rogue. I'm interested in the dark side, I don't want to be a team member, I'm not interested in that. And I felt like that was where we were headed," explained Ferguson.

"It takes a long time to make Mission too. It is blood, sweat and tears doing those. Since I finished, I've done a TV show and two movies, and they're still doing [the same] Mission. But, you never know [if she'd return]."

McQuarrie himself was forced to defend the killing of Ilsa last year, telling Empire Magazine: "It's a very heroic death for that character. It is not in any way, shape, or form disposable.

"It's a noble and heroic death. That, to me, is the hardest thing to find for a character."

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning is now available to rent or purchase. An untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film will be releasing on May 23, 2025.
