Rebels win final regular-season Super Rugby Australia match

SYDNEY (AP) — The Melbourne Rebels beat New South Wales 36-25 on Saturday to leave the Waratahs winless in Super Rugby Australia this season.

The Rebels overcame two red cards in the final regular-season match for both teams as the Waratahs finished with eight consecutive losses. Melbourne had three wins from eight matches as both teams finished out of the playoffs.

On Friday, the Western Force qualified for the finals after three tries from Jordan Olowofela led them to a 30-27 victory over the Queensland Reds.

The result meant the Force finished third and they will take on the ACT Brumbies in a semifinal match next weekend in Canberra. The winner of that match will meet the first-place Reds in the final in Brisbane on May 8.

The Reds were caught up in a three-day COVID-19 lockdown in the Western Australian state capital and flew back east on Saturday while awaiting word from the Queensland government on quarantine plans.

Team officials said they hoped to have the players stay in home quarantine and a biosecure bubble at their Ballymore training ground ahead of the final.
