Recent Harrisburg graduate, college football commit identified as victim of Aug. 1 crash near Chancellor

Aug. 7—CHANCELLOR, S.D. — A recent Harrisburg graduate and college football commit has been identified as the person who died last week in a two-vehicle crash north of Chancellor.

Mason "Moose" Jacobson, 18, of Sioux Falls, was named by the South Dakota Highway Patrol as the victim.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 1, authorities in Turner County were called to the intersection of 276th Street and 461st Avenue, roughly one mile north of Chancellor, for a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Preliminary crash information released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol indicates that a 2008 Chevrolet Colorado, driven by Jacobson, was eastbound on 276th Street when it failed to stop at an intersection.

The pickup collided in an intersection with a 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan, which was northbound on 461st Avenue, driven by 62-year-old Steve Fett, of Lennox.

Jacobson was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Fett sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a Sioux Falls hospital. His seat belt use is under investigation.

The loss of Jacobson sent shockwaves through the Harrisburg School District, from which Jacobson graduated from in May, as many took to social media to share their support.

The Harrisburg School District also released a statement on their website, asking for thoughts and prayers to be directed to Jacobson's family.

"Harrisburg Families: It pains us deeply to inform you of the loss of one of our 2022 graduates," the statement reads. "Mason Jacobson died Monday evening from injuries sustained following a car accident. As our school community grieves, we ask you keep Mason's family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

In February, Jacobson committed to play collegiate football at Minnesota State University, Mankato. In response, the Mavericks also published a statement.

"Minnesota State Football and all of #MavNation mourn the loss of incoming freshman offensive lineman Mason Jacobson (Harrisburg, S.D.)," their statement, posted to Twitter, reads. "Our hearts are hurting for his family and friends. Godspeed Mason."

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
