Record-breaking building permit numbers released by city

Building permits in Sioux Falls have exploded to a record-high $1.72 billion, according to data from the City of Sioux Falls.

That's thanks to a 58% increase in the number of building permits and is much higher compared to last year's numbers at the same point ($868 million).

Of the record-high number, more than $1.08 billion have come from new commercial additions.

New commercial projects include manufacturing, offices, apartments, strip malls, hotels, restaurants and more. Building permits for apartments have reached $470.8 million, higher than last year's total of $203.1 million, according to data from the City of Sioux Falls.

Another high increase came from strip malls, hotels and restaurants, which totals $301.5 million, compared to last year's numbers of $25.5 million.

New residential permits were up 56% from last year, with 3,255 of those coming from multiple-family units, 346 townhome units and 593 single-family units. There have been no duplex units added, down from four compared to last year.
