Record number of global coronavirus cases for second time in 3 days
There has been a record number of daily new coronavirus cases globally for the second time in three days, the World Health Organization (WHO) says.
A total of 230,370 new COVID-19 cases were recorded worldwide on Sunday, along with 5,285 deaths.
Most of the new cases were from nations in North and South America, with the US recording 66,281.
The US is the world’s worst-affected country, with more than 3.3 million cases and more than 135,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.
The previous highest daily cases toll was recorded by the WHO on Friday, when 228,102 cases were reported.
Sunday’s tally showed that the US, Brazil, India and South Africa had the biggest increases.
The number of total global cases is more than 12.9 million, Johns Hopkins says, while more than 569,000 people have died.
In the UK, the government says there have been 44,819 COVID-19 deaths, but the actual figure is estimated to be much higher.
On Monday, nail bars, tattoo parlours and beauty salons can reopen in England, nine days after pubs, cafes and restaurants welcomed back their customers.
In the US, the state of Florida reported a record increase of more than 15,000 new cases of COVID-19 in 24 hours on Sunday.
It means that if Florida were a country, it would rank fourth in the world for the most new cases in a day behind the US, Brazil and India.
Brazil reported 631 new deaths on Sunday, with a new total of 1,864,681 confirmed cases, its health ministry said.
It now has an official total of 72,100 deaths, but the real total is likely to be much higher, health experts say, because of a lack of testing.
