Record-tying round leads to Medalist title for Bannister at Cascades

Even before this week's heatwave arrived, University of Southern Indiana standout Jason Bannister torched the courses at Martinsville Golf Club and Cascades to run away with the men's championship flight title as the 26th annual Medalist golf tournament concluded on Sunday.

The 19-year-old, who just finished his freshman season with the Screaming Eagles as a teammate with Bloomington North grad Jace Day, followed a first-round 68 with a six-under 65 at Cascades, which included a double-bogey on No. 11 to go with nine birdies.

It tied Bob Karcher for the all-time tournament low round.

Other winners were Peggy Taylor (women), Jim Alexander (seniors), Dan Neubecker (super seniors) and Jacob Knapp (juniors).

Bannister won by nine shots over Logan Vernon (69-73—142), who competes at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. Third was Mitch Oard, who finished with a 67 for 143 while Nick Burris had a Sunday 68 for a 144. Defending champ Jansen Perdue was fifth at 74-75—149.

The Senior and Super Senior titles went down to the wire.

Alexander and defending champ Gary EuDaly each firing 69s on the final day, but Alexander's 71 opener made the difference, 140-141. Joe Newman was third at 71-72—143.

Alexander escaped a bad drive on the 18th with a 9-iron from 135 yards that stopped three feet from the hole. Alexander made his par putt while EuDaly's 15-footer for birdie came up a tad short.

Neubecker (72-75) and Rory Brown (72-75) needed three extra holes to snap the tie the in Super Seniors, with a par winning it.

Taylor (80-82—162) repeated as Women's champ as did Knapp (77-73—150), both winning by comfortable margins.
