Records broken during Webster Schroeder indoor track team's triumph

Corintia Griffith and Camryn Cole underlined Saturday, that two of the state's top indoor girls track and field athletes - maybe in the United States - are in Section V at Webster Schroeder.

Griffith, a junior, broke the state indoor triple jump record during the Section V Class A1 Championships at Nazareth College. A two-time member of Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester track teams, Griffith jumped 41 feet, 11 1/2 inches to top the mark set at 41-10 in 2020 on Long Island by Alissa Braxston.

"I started with a 38 safety jump, to get comfortable with my mark," Griffith said. "I took off about a foot behind the board. Second jump, I could feel it was a good one. I thought it might be, like, a 41-4.

"I was very surprised (the winner) was that long. I didn’t expect this."

The Section V indoor track triple jump record was 40-11 by Marlena Robinson in 1997, when she would seem to hurl herself into jumping pits during a standout career at Brighton.

Cole cleared six feet during the sectional Class A1 high jump event, better than her Section V record 5-11 leap last month that was the No. 1 height in the nation this season, according to athletic.net.

The website's leaderboard will have Griffith's triple jump at No. 2 in the nation so far this season.

Griffith also finished in third place in the girls 600-meter dash and second in the long jump to help Webster Schroeder win the girls sectional team championship.

Cole added first-place finishes in the long jump, a Section V season-best 19-7 3/4, and 55-meter hurdles. Webster Schroeder senior Shelby Boise ran the 600 in 1:38.20, providing 10 more first-place points for the Warriors. Boise is now No. 2 on the event's Section V season girls leaderboard at yentiming.com.

Since sectionals is, number one, all about the team, several athletes sacrificed personal best chances for doubling and tripling up.

Boise had little time to revel in her first sectional medal. Ten minutes after her three-second victory in the 600 she ran as second seed to Fairport’s Zoe Marcus in the 1500.

“It’s OK," Boise said, “We’re just trying to get as many points as we can.” She didn’t finish – Marcus won by eight seconds – but Boise helped Schroeder’s 3,200 relay finish third and pick up six more points.

“The heavy lifters came through great as expected, the supporting cast exceeded expectations and everything pretty much went according to plan,” Webster Schroeder coach Dave Klehr said.

McQuaid won the Section V Class A1 boys team championship, finishing ahead of Webster Thomas and third-place Hilton.

Victor was second in the girls team scoring, Rush-Henrietta third.
