Recruiting: Killian LB Stanquan Clark headlines top performers from Gardens jamboree

PALM BEACH GARDENS — A quick word of advice for ball carriers who face Miami Killian this fall: Secure the football. Because if you don’t — and maybe even if you do — there’s a good chance Stanquan Clark will take it away from you.

Clark, a rising senior linebacker, forced two fumbles, recovered both of them and returned one more than 95 yards for a touchdowns Saturday during the 10-team spring jamboree Saturday at Palm Beach Gardens High School.

One one play, Clark wrapped up the ball carrier and ripped the ball out of his hands before the back hit the ground.

In addition to forcing turnovers, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Clark (No. 66 USA Today Florida Network top 100) made several tackles in halves against Palm Beach Gardens and Plantation.

Clark’s 18 offers include Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, Penn State and Texas A&M. He said he plans to narrow down his list in the coming weeks.

Here are some of the other recruits who stood out Saturday.

Lakewood QB Anthony Colandrea

The biggest question being asked as Lakewood dismantled Plantation was whether or not Middle Tennessee State would be able to hold on to Colandrea for the next seven months. The 6-foot, 175-pound dual-threat quarterback was outstanding, throwing four touchdown passes and running for another against Plantation. Beyond the stats, Colandrea showed a lot. He throws on time, he’s willing to take a hit to give his receiver more time to get open and he can outrun defenders (from South Florida). Colandrea is verbally committed to MTSU but it would be a surprise if more schools didn’t at least try to sway him before National Signing Day.

Miami Palmetto athlete Jacory Barney

Miami Palmetto ATH Jacory Barney

College coaches who didn’t know about Barney before Saturday certainly do now. The 6-foot, 160-pound rising junior displayed his speed, quickness and playmaking ability with two touchdown catches against Stranahan. He also scored against Treasure Coast, but the play was wiped out by a penalty. Palmetto coaches have been raving about Barney all spring and they didn’t exaggerate. Barney, who has offers from Georgia Tech, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Utah and others, has emerged as a player to watch in the class of 2024.

Lakewood ATH Montravious Lloyd

Lloyd usually is listed as a running back, but considering he lined up exclusively at wide receiver Saturday, we’re going to say athlete. He didn’t just line up at receiver, he showed out by scoring two receiving touchdowns and coming inches away from a third. The 6-foot Lloyd ran good routes, has soft hands and his ability to pick up yards after the catch also was impressive. His second score, a 70-yard catch-and-run, showcased his speed.

Miami Edison WR Nathaniel Joseph

The Clemson commit is lightning in a bottle and he showed that again Saturday with a tremendous catch-and-run for a score against both Treasure Coast and Coconut Creek. The touchdown against Treasure Coast was wiped out by a penalty but that doesn’t take away from the individual brilliance Joseph (No. 22 top 100) showed in breaking tackles and racing away from defenders.

Killian DB Dwight Bootle II

First off, it’s worth noting that Bootle (No. 98 top 100) added good weight during the offseason and is close to 185 after playing around 169 in 2021. The Nebraska commit had several tackles and intercepted a pass Saturday. Bootle is a defensive back who isn’t afraid to make plays in the run game – evidenced by him standing up and then driving back a Gardens ball carrier early in the day.

Stranahan RB Sincere Rodriguez

A 5-foot-11, 205-pound rising senior, Rodriguez showed his ability to run hard between the tackles, break tackles and catch the ball out of the backfield. He showed good burst in the open field and has the ability to pick up yards in a hurry. Rodriguez has picked up offers from Bowling Green, Navy and Campbell this spring.

Palm Beach Gardens DB Michael Wright III

Wright had one interception and almost came up with another against Killian in the opener. The 5-foot-11, 180-pounder, who picked up his first Division I offer from Rhode Island earlier this week, impressed several coaches with his speed and athleticism.

Plantation WR Jamari Haynes

The rising senior slot receiver, who picked up his first offer from Illinois this spring, didn’t get a lot of touches Saturday but he made the most of them. Haynes is undersized (5-foot-9, 160 pounds) but has track speed to go along with natural athleticism that allowed him to slip between defenders. He also showed toughness after taking a big hit along the sideline against Killian but popped back up and kept playing.

Miami Southridge ATH Jayquan Reid

The rising junior showed why he added a handful of offers (UMass, Central Michigan, Grambling State) during the past week. The 6-foot, 165-pound athlete is just that: Athletic. He made guys miss when he had the ball in his hands and also showed good cover skill at cornerback. He’ll be another guy to watch during the next 18 months.
