College coaches often have to spend just as much time recruiting parents as they have to spend recruiting the players themselves, if not more so, when out on the trail.

Florida coach Dan Mullen, though, didn’t have any problem with that part last weekend.

Lloyd Summerall III — a Rivals.com 2019 four-star defensive end out of Lakeland, Florida — took an official visit with the Gators last weekend with his father, Lloyd Summerall.

When it came to the photoshoot portion of the visit, where the players suit up in full Gators uniforms, Mullen hit the elder Summerall with an idea — and he just couldn’t say no.

“I wanted to match my son,” Summerall told The Athletic. “I wanted to be right there with him, whatever he had on. He had on one more sleeve than I did, though. But the shoes, they got the best shoes. I think they got all Jordan shoes. They got the best stuff. It’s all good stuff.

“All the recruits were right there, so they had everything accessible. All the sizes for anybody. Anybody could have fit in it that day. Every parent already had on shirts. So I took it a step further. I had to one-up everybody.”

From The Athletic:

“Man, you look pretty swole,” Mullen said, as Summerall recalled. “You probably need to go ahead and put on a whole uniform.”

Summerall responded: “You know what? I guess I’ll go ahead and try that then.”

“Well,” Mullen said, per Summerall, “go do it.’ ”

“And I did it,” Summerall said. “And, oh, my God, it was so funny.”

That is how Lloyd Summerall III’s father became decked out head to toe in Jordan Gators gear.

“I wasn’t going to say no to a dare,” Summerall told The Athletic. “I’m a competitor, too.”

Summerall III has yet to make up his mind as to where he’ll end up next season. The No. 16 overall defensive end in the 2019 class has drawn interest from Florida State, Miami, Nebraska, Auburn and Florida, among others.

While Summerall III’s tweet took off and garnered tons of jokes on the internet, many wondered if his father had any eligibility left he could use to suit up along side him next season wherever he ends up. His dad, though, doesn’t think he’s quite prepared for that.

“I’m pretty robust, bro,” Summerall told The Athletic. “We got a tree business. I’m ready, but I ain’t ready for that. I don’t think I’m ready for that level of sport.”
