Recycle your old child safety seats this February at these Hampton Roads locations

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR) is once again joining forces with community partners to collect old, used and potentially unsafe child seats.

The annual Child Safety Seat Round-Up program began in 1989. In addition to collecting old child safety seats, the program also serves to educate caregivers about the possible dangers of using car seats more than eight years old, have been purchased from a thrift store or yard sale, have missing parts, or have no traceable recall information.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration, 863 children (aged 0-14) were killed in vehicle crashes in 2021 with 308 of them unrestrained. There were 8,539 unrestrained injuries for this age group.*

Virginia law requires all children under the age of eight to be properly restrained in an approved Department of Transportation (DOT) child restraint.

As an incentive, you can turn in an old safety seat for a reward during the month of February.

DSHR and its community partners, Walmart, AAA Tidewater Virginia, Hoffman Beverage Co., Waste Management of Virginia, and the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, will be encouraging everyone to “round-up” their old child safety seats and turn them in for a “reward” throughout the month of February.

Walmart is providing a $5 Walmart gift card for each seat turned in (limit 2 rewards per person). Safety seats can be dropped off at Walmart Supercenter select locations or at any of the eleven AAA Tidewater Virginia locations from February 1–29, 2024.

All collected safety seats will be recycled by Waste Management of Virginia, Inc.

Since the first DSHR Round-Up, over 18,000 seats have been removed from general circulation.
