Recycling drop-off sites to return to Jefferson Parish

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Jefferson Parish residents will soon have access to free recycling drop-off sites.

Parish leaders announced a contract with REALCYCLE and Glass Half Full to offer weekly recycling drop-off sites in Metairie and Marrero for the next six months.

The contracts come after a failed motion for a $6.1 million deal that would have distributed 66,000 bins to the entire parish for curbside recycling.

Starting on April 13, Jefferson Parish residents can drop off their recyclable materials at 400 David Drive and 6440 Lapalco Blvd. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday.

REALCYCLE and Glass Half Full will be collecting glass bottles and jars, cardboard, aluminum cans, tin cans, steel cans, plastic soda and water bottles, plastic milk containers, plastic juice containers, plastic shampoo containers, plastic detergent containers and mixed paper.

Parish leaders said residents wanting to participate in the program should use the following guidelines:

  • Only recycle items on the provided list.

  • Only recycle clean items, and rinse metal and plastic food containers. Items that are too dirty should not be recycled to help avoid contamination and mold.

  • Do not bag recyclable items.

  • Breakdown boxes and crush cans to make space for more items.

According to parish officials, residents should bring a driver’s license or utility bill to prove residency when items are dropped off.

From April 13 to June 19, REALCYCLE will collect items at the Lapalco Boulevard drop-off site and switch to the David Drive site on July 6.

Glass Half Full will collect materials at the David Drive drop-off site from April 13 to June 19 and switch to the Lapalco Boulevard site on July 6.

Parish leaders said commercial customers in unincorporated Jefferson Parish, the Town of Jean Lafitte and all Jefferson Parish municipalities can also use the drop-off sites.
