Red Bank bringing music to streets with Porchfest, extends Broadwalk dining

RED BANK - Musicians will play on residents' porches in the borough's first ever Porchfest on Sunday, Oct. 9, in partnership with the Red Bank nonprofit HABcore.

“It’s a music festival where, at different people’s houses, different musicians set up on the porch,” Councilwoman Kate Triggiano said. “You get a map and you go and you visit different locations and you listen to different music.”

Porchfest began in 2007 in Ithaca, New York, and spread in popularity to many towns in the United States and Canada.

In Monmouth County, Asbury Park began hosting its own porchfest starting in 2017. This year it will be held Sept. 10.

“It’s a really, really fun event. Musicians from all over the community get involved and it will be a really, really wonderful day,” Councilman Edward Zipprich said.

In addition to porchfest, Broadwalk was granted an extension of one month. The pedestrian plaza on Broad Street in downtown Red Bank will continue until Sunday, Oct. 2.

Red Bank RiverCenter Executive Director Bob Zuckerman said during Thursday night’s council meeting that “the first three weeks of this six-week period, we had a very oppressive heatwave. So, no one … (wanted) to eat outside when it feels like it’s 95 degrees out at 8 pm. So now we’re getting into the nicer weather.”

He said in September the borough will be able to compete with other towns for foot traffic because people will be less likely to flock to beach towns.

“It can be an even bigger success during September,” Zuckerman said.
