Red Cross hosts blood drives: J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum's been hosting blood drives for 11 years

May 12—Susie Quiroz went for a swim on Sunday afternoon during Memorial Day weekend in 2004 and hit her head, which caused internal bleeding.

She was life-flighted to Tulsa where she underwent surgery and needed several pints of blood.

"When she needed blood, it was there for her," father Wayne McCombs said.

McCombs, Executive Director at the J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum, began hosting blood drives twice a year at the museum to help.

"I couldn't do anything, but I could do this," he said.

J.M. Davis Arms & Historical Museum has been hosting blood drives for 11 years and has collected over 270 units, he said.

"We've been successful," he said.

McCombs said they've collected anywhere from 10 to 30 units of blood each drive.

Ladonna Shrum has been donating blood on and off for 15 — 20 years and said there was no specific reason she donates.

"If I need it one day, I hope it's there," she said.

Upcoming blood drives through the American Red Cross in Rogers County include:

—10 a.m. — 4 p.m. Monday, May 16 at BancFirst Lynn Riggs, 1698 S. Lynn Riggs Blvd.

—8:30 a.m. — 2:30 p.m. May 29 at Oologah United Methodist Church, 5834 E. 4140 Rd.

—10 a.m. — 4 p.m. June 2 at RCB Bank, 511 W. Will Rogers Blvd.

—12-6 p.m. June 7 at Claremore Church of the Nazarene, 1336 N. Dorothy Ave.

—10 a.m. — 4 p.m. June 7 at Hillcrest Hospital Claremore, 1202 N. Muskogee.
