Red Lion Christian outfielder heads Delaware All-State softball team
Red Lion Christian outfielder Peyton Pusey is the Player of the Year and leads the All-State softball team determined by voting of the Delaware High School Softball Coaches Association.
Pusey, a senior who has signed with Marist, batted .550 with five home runs, 20 RBIs, 27 runs scored and 16 stolen bases as the Lions went 13-4 this season.
Charter of Wilmington’s Jaida Church and Appoquinimink’s Alexia Fitzgerald join Pusey as the first-team outfielders.
Appo’s Savannah Laird is the first-team pitcher, while Caesar Rodney’s Stacey Deputy is the catcher. The infielders are Sussex Central’s McKenna Boyle at first base, Appo’s Hailey Watlington at second base, Caravel’s Veronica Diomede at shortstop and Smyrna’s Meghan Shirey at third base.
The All-State first team also has 11 at-large selections, including pitchers Madge Layfield of Sussex Central, Madelyn Pritchard of William Penn, Peyton Shields of Caesar Rodney, Ashlyn Tapman of Delmar, Lilli Showacre of Delmarva Christian and Ryleigh Thomas of Saint Mark’s.

Other first-team at-large selections are catchers Kate Evick of Sussex Central and Morgan Hall of Saint Mark’s, shortstop Julia Weglarz of Appoquinimink, third baseman Rebecca Maiorano of Middletown and second baseman Mikayla Walsh of Caravel.
The Coach of the Year is Skye Boris, who guided Caesar Rodney to a 17-3 finish.
