Red Raiders host No. 1 Texas in nationally televised volleyball match
After winning its first two Big 12 Conference matches, the Texas Tech volleyball team faces its stiffest test when it hosts No. 1 Texas at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in a match to be broadcast on ESPN.
The Red Raiders (13-2, 2-0) are coming off a home sweep of Kansas State on Wednesday, four days after engineering a come-from-behind five-set road win over West Virginia to kick off conference play.
Kenna Sauer has tallied 228 kills to lead the Red Raiders. Reagan Cooper (131 kills), Brooke Kanas (121 kills), Maddie O'Brien (96 kills) and Karrington Jones (96 kills) have diversified the attack. Reese Rhodes has kept things humming, dishing out 563 assists, and Maddie Correa (222 digs) and Sauer (148 digs) have been key cogs on the defensive end.
The Longhorns (10-0, 2-0) have beaten nationally ranked Ohio State, Minnesota and Stanford.
UT was taken to the limit by Kansas, but secured a five-set road win in its conference opener before sweeping Oklahoma at home.
Logan Eggleston leads the attack with 143 kills, followed by Madisen Skinner (93), Asjia O'Neal (66) and Melanie Parra (52). Saige Ka'aha'aina-Torres orchestrates the attack, tallying 364 assists, and Zoe Fleck leads the defensive effort with 162 digs.
Tech soccer
Texas Tech snapped Oklahoma State's six-match win streak, and now the Red Raiders will try to do the same to Oklahoma in Big 12 action.
Tech (4-3-5, 0-1-2) takes on OU (7-2-2, 2-0) at 1 p.m. Sunday in Norman, Oklahoma. The Sooners' last loss was Aug. 25 against Arkansas. Since then, they have a tie and seven victories, the last six in a row.
Tech fought Oklahoma State to a 1-1 draw on Thursday.
Macy Schultz leads the Red Raiders with seven points on three goals and one assist, and Ashleigh Williams has six points on three goals.
Senior forward Emma Hawkins paces Oklahoma with 10 points on five goals.
LCU men's soccer
CANYON — Lubbock Christian University midfielder Ezequiel Fidabel scored his first goal of the season, tying the match in the 65th minute, and Tom Miles made three saves as the Chaparrals battled West Texas A&M to a 1-1 draw Saturday in their Lone Star Conference opener.
Fidabel beat WT goalkeeper Asaf Kristal with a shot to the bottom right corner.
LCU (3-4-3, 0-0-1), since losing three in a row, has won a match and tied its past two. The Chaps overcame a 15-5 deficit in shots with Jordan Jayapuram and Fidabel taking two each.
Payne McIver gave West Texas A&M (2-2-5, 0-0-1) a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 13th minute.
LCU volleyball
Landri Withers registered 11 kills and St. Mary's beat Lubbock Christian University 25-20, 25-21, 25-23 Saturday, keeping the Lady Chaps from winning all three matches in a four-day Lone Star Conference homestand.
Sadie Hough and Brianna Morris-Worth added eight kills apiece for St. Mary's (8-9, 4-2), which has won three matches in a row.
Lily Bickley had eight kills for LCU (7-11, 3-4), which had beaten Midwestern State on Wednesday and St. Edward's on Friday. Kalli Dalland and Kiana Fallaha added seven kills apiece.
The Lady Chaps got 35 assists and 11 digs from Kayton Genenbacher and 15 digs from Kendall Mahaney.
The night before against St. Edward's, Aaliyah Gray and Fallaha pounded 15 kills apiece, Sage Chain was good for 13 and LCU prevailed 25-22, 25-12, 19-25, 21-25, 15-6.
The Lady Chaps withstood a 22-kill performance by Maya Smalls for St. Edward's (5-11, 2-3).
Genenbacher piled up 56 assists and 19 digs, and Mahaney finished with 22 digs.
Wayland football
PLAINVIEW — Dalton Dale passed for 261 yards and three touchdowns as Texas Wesleyan overwhelmed Wayland Baptist 59-16 Saturday in a Sooner Athletic Conference game.
Dale's scoring passes went for 37 yards to Caleb McKinney, 32 yards to Jaysen Price and 65 yards to McKinney, all in the first half. Dale also ran for a 16-yard TD. McKinney finished with three catches for 112 yards and Texas Wesleyan (4-1, 3-1) bounced back from its only loss of the season last week against Ottawa (Ariz.).
Wayland quarterback Bryan Ponder had 239 yards on 18-for-37 passing. He connected with Skyler Whitten for a 12-yard touchdown. Whitten finished with eight catches for 128 yards for the Pioneers (2-3, 2-2), who were coming off a 65-31 rout of Texas College in which they produced a school-record point total.
Willie Phillips ran five times for 33 yards, including a 14-yard TD.
