Terrell Tilmon, left, faces off with Steve Stephens during an Oregon football practice. Tilmon, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound outside linebacker, has transferred to Texas Tech.

Shortly after he took the Texas Tech football coaching job, Joey McGuire said his philosophy on using the NCAA transfer portal centered around bringing home former Texas high-school players who had signed with out-of-state programs.

The latest example came Thursday. Tech announced the addition of Terrell Tilmon, a Mansfield Timberview graduate who spent his first two seasons at Oregon. A Tech athletics spokesman said Tilmon is enrolled and going through off-season conditioning with the Red Raiders.

Tilmon, listed at 6-foot-5 and 225 pounds, will play outside linebacker for the Red Raiders.

Tilmon played in 14 games his freshman year at Oregon, mostly on special teams, and was credited with five tackles. That was in 2021. The Ducks' staff moved him from outside linebacker to tight end before last season, and he got into only one game in 2022.

He had his name entered into the NCAA transfer portal when the 45-day window opened in early December.

Coming out of high school, Tilmon was ranked as the No. 61 prospect in Texas by the Rivals recruiting service and the No. 70 recruit in the state by 247Sports. According to the recruiting services, 20 schools offered him scholarships with Big 12 programs Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State and Tech among them.

He also was courted by Arizona, Arizona State, Minnesota, Missouri, Utah and Washington State among others.

This off-season, Tech also has added former Louisiana-Monroe defensive tackle Quincy Ledet from West Orange-Stark and former San Diego State safety C.J. Baskerville from North Richland Hills Richland.

Other former Texas high-school players on Tech's 2022 roster who began their careers out of state were linebackers Jacob Rodriguez and Dimitri Moore, defensive end Robert Wooten and receivers Brady Boyd, Jordan Brown and Haydon Wiginton.

Massey picks ACU

Former Texas Tech defensive tackle Syncere Massey announced this week he is transferring to Abilene Christian University, whose head coach is former Tech defensive coordinator Keith Patterson.

Massey, 6-foot-5 and 325 pounds, redshirted this season as a true freshman and didn't get into a game.

Grambling and Southern also had offered Massey scholarships after he had his name entered into the NCAA transfer portal.
