Red Sox place P Price (wrist) on IL

Boston Red Sox left-hander David Price landed on the 10-day injured list Thursday after receiving a cortisone shot in his pitching wrist.

The team announced that an MRI exam on Price's left wrist revealed a triangular fibrocartilage complex cyst.

Price (7-5, 4.36 ERA) is 0-3 in his past five starts, driving his season ERA up more than a full run in that span. The 33-year-old's last outing came at the New York Yankees on Sunday, when he allowed seven runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings. The move to the injured list was retroactive to Monday.

Boston recalled right-handed Hector Velazquez from Triple-A Pawtucket. Velazquez, 30, is 1-4 with a 5.67 ERA in 24 games for the Red Sox this season, starting eight times. He and left-hander Brian Johnson are the likely candidates to fill Price's spot in the rotation.

Boston entered play Thursday six games back of the second wild-card spot in the American League.
