Boston Red Sox right-hander Garrett Whitlock was the Opening Day starter for Triple-A Worcester on Friday.

Whitlock took the mound for the first of what likely will be two rehab starts with the WooSox. He was placed on the injured list retroactive to March 27 with a hip injury.

Taking on the Syracuse Mets, Whitlock surrendered one run on six hits and one walk in four innings of work. He tallied six strikeouts and threw 75 pitches, 50 of them for strikes.

Whitlock's next rehab start likely will take place April 5 according to The Boston Globe's Pete Abraham, who estimates he could return to Boston around April 11. When he does, it is expected to be in the Red Sox' starting rotation.

The Red Sox selected Whitlock from the New York Yankees in the 2020 Rule 5 Draft. The 26-year-old has since evolved into one of Boston's most promising pitchers. In 77 appearances (nine starts), he has amassed 2.73 ERA, 1.062 WHIP and 163 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings.

Whitlock was rewarded with a a four-year, $ 18.75 million contract extension with the club last year.
