Red wine made by Algoma's von Stiehl Winery scores big in national competition

Three red varietal wines made by von Stiehl Winery in Algoma earned big scores in the USA Wine Ratings International Competition in San Francisco. Its 2019 Teroldego, center, scored scored 96 points out of 100 in the still wines (vintage/nonvintage) category, topped by only three other wines, while the 2017 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, right, was given 92 points and 2017 Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon, left, scored 89.

ALGOMA - A recent addition to von Stiehl Winery's portfolio of red varietal wines was rated one of the top wines in a national competition.

The Algoma winery’s 2019 Teroldego scored 96 points out of 100 in the still wines (vintage/nonvintage) category at this year's USA Wine Ratings International Competition in San Francisco. Only three other wines scored higher, with one receiving 98 points and two others 97s, with eight other wines from the U.S., Argentina, Australia, Italy, Portugal and South Africa scoring a 96.

The Teroldego is von Stiehl's newest creation focusing on varietals not common to Wisconsin. The Teroldego grape is a lesser-known one, grown almost exclusively in Italy with less than 2% coming from outside that country. The grapes for this wine came from the Clarksburg region in California. The winery describes its Teroldego as a full-bodied, dry, soft wine that pairs well with cured meats, pizzas and pastas, like many other Italian red wines.

It wasn't the only red varietal wine from Wisconsin’s oldest licensed winery (in operation since 1967) to score well at the competition. von Stiehl's 2017 Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon was given 92 points and its 2017 Barrel Select Cabernet Sauvignon scored 89 points.

“Our red wine program has really been a focus for us, and it’s exciting for our team to see their passion score so incredibly well,” general manager Anthony Bilwin said in a news release.

It's not the only notable result for von Stiehl in national wine competitions this year. Its popular Cherry Bounce was named Best in Class — Liqueur at the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in upstate New York for the second year in a row.

von Stiehl Winery is at 115 Navarino St., Algoma. It makes more than 40 different grape and other fruit wines and ciders that can be sampled in its tasting room and Cider Bar. For more information, call 920-487-5208 or visit vonstiehl.com.
