“It is a program for the entire family,” said Tammy Kindle, who took the class last fall and handles enrollment ad other administrative tasks. “My husband, Matt, and I enrolled because, at the time we had just moved into the community and wanted to make new friends. We both enjoyed the class immensely, as did our son, and we still do things with the friends we made through this class.”

Sessions are held at the New Hope Community Church, 637 N. Market St., Loudonville.

“The class is offered absolutely free,” Kindle stressed. “Each evening starts with dinner provided by East of Chicago Pizza, creating a fun environment for both adults and children. Then the children go to a child care area, with fun promised, including songs, games and crafts, child care provided by Olive Tree."

Talking family life, challenges and joys

Meanwhile, adults settle in a relaxing environment, and start talking about family life, challenges and joys, all addressed in an open, informative and friendly way, Kindle said, noting information on specific issues can be provided by request.

"What we have is a fun gathering, a place for adults to hang out without their kids, for an hour and a half to talk about real stuff," Kindle said. "Among the lessons I still benefit from through the class is not about caring for the family, but rather caring for myself. I revisit that many times.”

Sessions are moderated by facilitators from Catholic Charities of Ashland County, with the goal of the class, Kindle stressed, “to make parenting better.”

Specific subjects touched upon in the five-week program include problem solving, working as a team, how to ask for help, how to calm down and breathe, how to have fun together and how to communicate more effectively.

“As you absorb this information, you can put into place easy tips, tricks and skills to make yours’s a healthier, happier family,” Kindle said. “Also, all sessions are conducted in a very easy-going atmosphere where adults feel comfortable interacting with each other. It works even if you are a listener. Just come and listen. You will learn great stuff.”
