Reddit Just Helped a Mom Avoid Giving Her Baby a Porn Name

It’s a very good thing that parents-to-be have several months to decide on their baby’s name, hashing out differences in taste and culture, deciding which dead or living relative to honor, and determining the proper spelling variation. It’s the latter dilemma that almost ended badly (and hilariously) for one expecting mother and her husband — until she took her issue to Reddit this week.
“AITA for telling my husband he can’t pick the name anymore?” was the subject line/question reluctantlady chose to kick off her post on the AmItheAsshole subreddit. “Here’s our current issue: He wants to name her after his mother, whose nickname was Poppy, which I’m fine with. It’s a cute name, but he wants to spell it Papi… When I told him that’s a) not how you would pronounce that word, and b) you are naming her daddy in other languages, he got mad and said he likes it [spelled] that way and people would get it.”
We hope you took a second to laugh to yourself about that one, especially if you happen to be Latin. For us, “Papi” is either a term of endearment for our fathers, as the original poster mentioned, or a sexy term for men. This goes far beyond “unique” baby name spelling.
“Last night, he was rubbing my belly and called her Poppy, and I said, ‘You mean papi?’ ” she continued. “He got mad at me and stormed off. He won’t give me any other names or idea of what he likes. He is adamant it should be spelled this way and isn’t hearing me out, AITA?”
You may have already guessed that absolutely no one ruled that she is in the wrong here. Here is the most on-point answer in the thread:
“For the record I just asked my 14&19 year old what they would think about a girl named Papi, and they both said ‘aiiiiii Paaaappppiii’ in an very exaggerated porn-y way,” wrote queenoreo. “Middle school should be a great time for poor Papi Smith.”
Persephone911 agreed, writing, “EXACTLY! As a Latino I can’t even call my dad ‘papi’ like I did as a kid because it sounds ‘porn-y.’ ”
Others also argued about whether one would actually pronounce “Papi” and “Poppy” the same way, which is more of a subjective and/or regional accent question that’s kind of secondary to the porn teasing and daddy issues. It’s a shame, because Poppy is quite a lovely springy flower name, if you ask us.
What we really love about this exchange is that it has a very happy ending.
“UPDATE: showed him the replies, safe to say it has become apparent to him that’s a ridiculous way to spell POPPY,” reluctantlady added to her post. “We are all good, Reddit. Poppy shall remain supreme!”
We truly wonder what kind of baby-naming conversations happened between these celebrity parents.
