WEYMOUTH – A Newton-based real estate investment firm will convert a former nursing home on Broad Street into 80 studio and one-bedroom apartments.

Sawyer Realty Partners last year purchased the former Colonial Nursing Center, a 210-bed nursing home at 125 Broad St.

The building, built in 1963, is about 77,000 square feet and sits on 2.11 acres. The nursing home closed in March 2020 and has been vacant since then.

Bane Care Management, which owned the nursing home, said at the time that the building needed significant renovations and structural improvements, and decided to sell the building and relocate its residents.

Sawyer Realty Partners got approval from the zoning board of appeals last year to convert the building into 80 apartments with a courtyard, amenity space and 122 parking spots. The project will include updates to the outside of the building and improvements to the parking lot.

Sawyer Realty Partners says DJSA Architecture PC is redesigning the property. The firm expects to start the work this spring and complete the project by the end of next year.

The site is on the outskirts of Weymouth Landing, which has seen a rebirth in the last few years with several redevelopment projects and new businesses.

Construction of developer Nick Delegas' 87-unit mixed-use complex in set to wrap up this spring, and coffee shop Fuel America recently opened inside Weston Park Apartments on Broad Street.
