Redfield faces Milbank in opening round of B state baseball tourney; Smittys season ends

Pairings have been set for the American Legion baseball state tournaments.

The Class A double-elimination tournament runs today through Sunday at Fitzgerald Stadium in Rapid City. First-round pairings follow.

  • 10 a.m.: Brookings vs. Pierre

  • 12:30 p.m.: Mitchell vs. Rapid City Post 320

  • 4 p.m.: Brandon Valley vs. Sioux Falls East

  • 7 p.m.: Harrisburg vs. Rapid City Post 22

The Aberdeen Smittys did not qualify for the state tournament. They were swept by Mitchell 4-2 and 10-2 in a best-of-three series over the weekend in Mitchell. Aberdeen finished the season 22-23.

As host team, Rapid City Post 22 automatically qualified for the tournament. The other teams are the winners of series played last weekend.

The winner of the tournament will advance to the North Central Plains Regional Aug. 3-7 in Rapid City. And the winner of the regional tournament will advance to the American Legion World Series Aug. 11-16 in Shelby, N.D.

The Class B tournament is Friday through Aug. 2 in Gregory. First round pairings follow.

  • 10 a.m.: Hartford/Humboldt vs. Winner/Colome

  • 30 minutes after Game 1: Redfield vs. Milbank

  • 5 p.m.: Vermillion vs. Del Rapids

  • 30 minutes after Game 3: Platte/Geddes vs. Gregory

Gregory qualified for the B tourney as the host team, and the other squads won region tournaments. The state tournament uses a double-elimination format.
